(01-12) 01:34 PST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) --

Republican state senators have unanimously backed a state House proposal that would convene a bipartisan committee to investigate the corruption scandal surrounding Republican Gov. John G. Rowland.

The Republican senators did not ask for the three-term governor to resign.

"The governor, like any private citizen accused of wrongdoing, is entitled to due process and a thorough investigation of the facts," Senate Republican Leader Louis C. DeLuca said Sunday.

Republicans in the state House on Friday proposed that a select committee investigate the scandal. State Senate Democrats as a group have already called on the governor to resign and said they would support an impeachment investigation.

----snip----

Meanwhile, Rowland's office said the governor has no plans to step down from two advisory panels to the Bush administration. Rowland serves on the White House Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and a homeland security committee of state and local officials.

Rowland will also continue to serve as state chairman of President Bush's re-election campaign in Connecticut. That position is bestowed upon the highest-ranking Republican in the state.

he even lied to himself! what an odious cancer on the good people of connecticut ... he'll hang on till the bitter end. i predict the house will vote 148-3 to impeach, and the senate will convict by 30-6.
it'll all be over in three weeks.

It was not until a news conference on Dec. 2, when Mr. Rowland insisted that he had not taken gifts or had free work on his private cottage done by many of the same people now at the center of the federal corruption investigation, that things began to unravel.

...

On a yellow legal pad, Mr. Rowland divided a page in half and labeled one side "truth" and the other "fiction," according to an aide who saw the list. At the time, even the most minor details about what had been done at the cottage were being reported, so the list was equally detailed.

For instance, in the fiction column, Mr. Rowland listed news reports about "handmade" cabinets. In the truth category, he wrote that they were from Home Depot, the aide said.

However, that was among the first details to be questioned after the news conference. The cabinetmaker told reporters the same day that his work was most definitely not from Home Depot. Mr. Rowland was also questioned about his hot tub, which he said he bought at a store in Torrington. That response also proved false; it was a gift from an aide.
