WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Treasury Department has asked for an investigation into how a possibly classified document appeared in a televised interview of ex-Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, a department spokesman said Monday.

Treasury Spokesman Rob Nichols said that "based on the '60 minutes' interview aired Sunday night there was a document shown that appeared to be classified."

Senior Treasury Department staff met Monday morning and decided to refer the matter to the department's Inspector General, who will review to see if further investigation is warranted, Nichols said.

In a new book about his term as Treasury chief, O'Neill, who left the job in December 2002 in a shake-up of President Bush's economic team, criticized White House policies and provided the book's author with thousands of administration documents.

<snip>

Wow. That didn't take long. Imagine how quickly they would react if a CIA operative was outed.

3. I was thinking the same.
I feel that O'Neill would be careful enough to have sought legal counsel before turning the papers over to Suskind.

9. Actually, I think it may be the opposite...
As a previous poster stated, O'Neil is smart enough to seek counsel before turning over that kind of documentation.

This is probably just SOP in the Treasury Dept. This is probably a leak from somebody inside. Bushco is probably mad at the leak because it keeps the story alive.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but there has been very little play in the major online newspapers today. Washington Post had a very small byline. Disgusting.

7. That's to be expected
I'm 100% behind O'Neill, but I would expect the treasury dept. to look into the matter of 19,000 pages of documents being handed over.
He may have very well broken the law as Daniel Ellsberg did, and may be ready to fall on his sword to protect this country from the band of thieves that have betrayed all of us. I think he's ready to face whatever they throw at him, and I wish him godspeed.

8. Gee, what's classified at Treasury?
Dollar's falling?
Jobs in December were 1,000?
3 million jobs gone in three years?

I guess the real point then is that WHAT HE SAID WAS TRUE!!!!!

Right? Surely we don't classify lies!

10. National Security Counsel meeting notes & docs
Last night they said he had been given clearance on what to take. Unless they are lying (I doubt Suskind's editors would forget to check on this) I don't see where the problem is.
