Treasury to probe O'Neill

I couldn't find a dupe, so...

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Treasury has asked the U.S. inspector general’s office to investigate how a possibly classified document appeared Sunday in a televised interview of former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, a department spokesman said Monday.

"It’s based on the ‘60 Minutes’ segment, and I’ll be even more clear — the document as shown on ‘60 Minutes’ that said ‘secret,’” Rob Nichols, a spokesman for the Treasury, told reporters at a weekly briefing.

In a new book about his term as Treasury secretary, O’Neill, who left the job in December 2002 in a shake-up of President Bush’s economic team, criticized White House policies and provided author Ron Suskind with 19,000 documents, including memos from early 2001 for a post-Saddam Iraq and a Defense Department document titled “Foreign suitors for Iraqi Oil Field Contracts.”

While Nichols said it was customary for departing officials to take documents when they left, this probe will focus on how possibly classified information appeared on a television interview as one of O’Neill’s papers.

5. it is payback time--
Think of otherpersons who left different administrations and wrote tell all books. None of those administrations including Regan went after the people who wrote the books. Using the power of the fed government is pretty heavy handed.

Wonder if they will go after Kevin Phillips because of "American Dynasty". This is a mkust read.

7. Boy, you got that right ProudPatriot.
I think it's VERY interesting how now, all of a sudden, the government snaps into action. Where were they when the Plame incident was going on? Asleep at the wheel? Sitting on their hands?

I just think it's god damn revolting how they are so incredibly selective about their sense of "justice".

It just amazes me that they are so quick to act now, but all these other times of really gross injustice, they did nothing.

May O'Neill and all the others before him succeed.

8. O'Neill this morning on Today said it was a cover letter cleared.....
by the general counsel of the Treasury Dept. He said that as head of Treasury he would have asked for an investigation himself. He said they gave him several CD's that he turned over to Suskind without reviewing.

He also said that the policy of regime change was inherited from the previous administration.

He went on to say that he supported the first and second tax cuts but was against the third as it threatened the stability of Social Security and the healthcare systems. He projected 6% growth in the third quarter of 2003 without the third cut but that the additional 2.2% of growth was attributal to the third cut but questioned at what cost.

He said that he planned on voting for Bush in 2004 as he had seen no other viable alternative/candidate.
