Spurned, wives blame 9/11 firemen's widows
Susan Zazulka thought she was one of the lucky ones. Her husband, New York City firefighter John Zazulka, survived the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

But a year later, she lost him to the widow of a firefighter killed that day, part of what appears to be an ugly trend within the New York Fire Department.

"I loved John and I just can't believe that this could happen," Susan Zazulka said. "I don't know who he is anymore."

The city's firefighters - 343 of whom died - were the heroes of 9/11. But the stories of spurned wives have painted a more nuanced portrait, of heroes who are human, too.

I have no idea if this will be of interest to anyone, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

1. Sad, but predictable
Survivor guilt probably played a part in this too.

2. I couldn't bother to read the entire article, but...
I was surprised that the article didn't bring up early the financial compensation that these widows will get from WTC. I could be an incentive for some husbands.

3. Sad, weird story
Trauma can do some pretty strange things to people. I feel extremely sorry for the woman stuck with four kids and a creepy ex who doesn't pay child support. :grr:
