O'Neill Denies Charge Over Book Documents
MODS: This is a new story at yahoo, delete if you think it is a dupe.

snip>>Interviewed on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday, O'Neill said he had asked the Treasury Department's chief legal counsel "to have the documents that are OK for me to have" for use in the book entitled, "The Price of Loyalty."

Asked if he thought the internal Treasury probe was a get-even move by the administration, O'Neill replied, "I don't think so. If I were secretary of the treasury and these circumstances occurred, I would have asked the inspector general to look into it." But O'Neill also said he thinks the questions could have been more readily answered if top Treasury officials had talked to the agency's legal counsel.

"I'm surprised that he didn't call the chief legal counsel," O'Neill said of his successor, Treasury Secretary John Snow.

1. O'Neil was great on the Today Show
O'Neil was great on the today show, putting more nails in the Bush administration's coffin. This investigation of him is just a pathetic attempt to try and switch the focus on O'Neils devestating revelations about Bush cowardice and hypocracy. Of course that didn't stop the hack writers of the GOP "Butt Kissing" Wall Street Journal from writing a moronic article that tries in vain to discredit O'Neil. Thr truth is O'Neil is one of Americas top ecconomists, and he was right all along about how dumb the Bush tax cuts were... But don't expect the losers of the WSJ to admit the truth

2. Is it true that..
..today, O'Neill said he was sorry for calling Bush "blind", and that he will vote for Bush in '04 because nobody else is capable? Thats what I just read on a rightwing forum--and if its true, I'm wondering whether O'Neill deserves all the support we're giving him (through booksales and otherwise).

5. O'Neill didn't write the book
He was a source for it - an unpaid source at that. So even if O'Neill backtracks the book is still valid, and you're not helping Bush by buying several copies and mailing them to your elected representatives.

12. Many would backtrack given the swift and
serious charges being leveled against him. He may SAY that he doesn't think it is vindictive, but in the next breath he says he is surprised they didn't just talk to the legal counsel. Read between the lines. This was made public for a reason, because it did not have to be made public- they CHOSE to make it public.

17. I hope you're right.
I wasn't pleased to see his back tracking, but I can understand the pressure that he must be under. I think it's time to read the book.

11. He was clear and articulate... Did he have to volunteer
that he would probably vote for Bush and that no other candidates were up to snuff.? I can see why he said it but it wasn't asked of him.

13. Well, O'Neill is a Republican
I wouldn't expect him to vote for a Dem. That doesn't mean he's voting for Bush with any real enthusiasm, though.

4. Wall Street Journal makes a last ditch effort to save Bush's job
It isn't surprising that a publication like the WSJ, which is notorious for kissing the GOP's ass, would make a lame attempt to discredit Paul O'Neill. The author of the article on O'Neill proved his complete ignorance on the matter of economics. He even made the laughable assertion that our economy was in great shape (Yeah I guess that is why over 6,000,000 Americans are out of work). The article convieniently failed to mention that every non biased economist (like Warren Buffet) have blasted the Bush economic policy for it's ineptness. It is sad when a writer is allowed to write such garbage for a major American puplication, but it doesen't matter much anyways. The damage is done, Bush is on his way out and the GOP are crying like babies. In 2004 a Democrat will be in charge and he will run this country like a professional, not like a spoiled, sissy rich boy.

Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 12:33 PM by goforit
They also are promoting capitalism through globalization as
predicted by the prophets in the Bible of the New Testament.

Globalization and abuse of the worker is a good thing.

Oh they also said that imperialism through wars is important for
the success of globalization!!!

So let's all celebrate globalization with champaign and caviar!!(sarc)

16. And it took 74 days to investigate the Plame leak, and one day to
investigate this purported document leak.

6. Oh goody. Blood on the floor at treasury dept.
Is it too much to hope that the chief legal counsel resigns to "spend more time with his family?"
