Dean to campaign with Carter on eve of Iowa caucuses
Former President Carter will offer words of praise for Howard Dean when the Democratic front-runner attends church services with him in Georgia on the eve of the Iowa caucuses, aides to the two men said Tuesday.

Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi said they don't expect Carter to make an endorsement but are excited about appearing with the former president so close to voting in Iowa. Carter has said he will not express any preference about who should be the nominee.

Dean, a former Vermont governor, is locked in a tight race with Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt in Iowa's Jan. 19 presidential caucuses, according to recent polls. Dean is leading in the polls in New Hampshire and nationwide.

A show of support from Carter could boost Dean's appeal in the South. Carter, a Baptist, also could help Dean in his recent effort to appeal to religious voters.

2. Carter is such a wonderful person.
I'm really happy to hear this. Jimmy Carter has set an example for all future ex-Presidents. He has has lived his life helping others, and making the world a better place. I have the utmost respect for him. Regardless of your nominee choice, I think this says a great deal about the character of Howard Dean. By appearing with Dean, it says volumes about Carter's feelings toward him. Carter has no agenda, and cannot be bought, or cajoled. He is doing this from the heart.. and it is duly noted by me.

5. Carter is a good man
and my favorite president. A bit shy of an endorsement, but I think it means he thinks highly of Dean.

Quantum endorsement (it is an endorsement. Who else is he appearing with on the eve of the caucus?)

There's no overstating this.

Dean will walk away with an impressive victory in the Iowa Caucus now and with another landslide to follow in New Hampshire.

What's so significant along with Carter and Harkin both supporting Dean now, is that in spite of one solid week of orchestrated assaults against Howard Dean from the DLC, several of his opponents and Fox News, MSNBC, Newsweek and CNN's Paula Zahn, Dean has actually risen in the latest, most relevant Zogby Poll and increased his lead against Dick Gephardt further.

And all before the great James Earl Carter comes on board for Dean.

Kudos to Howard Dean and all of his supporters and hard working volunteers!

8. I betcha Dean is really excited about this engagement
Dean started his political stint by stuffing envelopes and doing other campaign grunt work for Carter's 1980 campaign. Carter lost that one, but Dean's campaign strategy is a 21st century version of Carter's 1976 surprise run.
