Bush admits he wanted regime change before 11 September
MARGARET NEIGHBOUR

01/13/04: (The Scotsman) THE United States president, George Bush, yesterday appeared to support claims made by one of his former advisers that he was intent on invading Iraq long before the 11 September attacks triggered a more aggressive focus to US foreign policy, saying his administration was "for regime change".

1. THAT is a red herring
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 06:47 PM by gristy
It is not the question, in my opinion. What Bush "wants", what the country feels would be best, may have been regime change. The question is what are the reasons Bush invaded Iraq? O'Neil's revelations help illuminate the true answers to this question. And those answers are damning to this misadministration.

3. OOOOOOPS!
Remember, the reassurance the nation got from the GOP whenever it was pointed out that a wet-brained ninny would be in the White House was that "the grown-ups would be in charge"....

"Reacting to O'Neill's assertion that Bush had begun planning for regime change in Iraq long before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Rumsfeld said that Bush made the decision to go to war in March 2003 "after trying everything else in the world." "

"At a State Department news conference, Powell disagreed with a private think tank report that maintained Iraq had not been an imminent threat to the United States. And the secretary defended the case he had made last February before the United Nations for a U.S.-led war to force Saddam from power.
"My presentation ... made it clear that we had seen some links and connections to terrorist organizations over time," Powell said. "I have not seen smoking gun, concrete evidence about the connection, but I think the possibility of such connections did exist and it was prudent to consider them at the time that we did." "

Too bad they forgot to stuff a sock in their chimp's yap....

"WASHINGTON -- President Bush acknowledged for the first time yesterday that he was mapping preparations to topple Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein as soon as he took office."

4. Let's hope that the same wants of Clinton don't get out too
Since Clinton wanted the same it's best we keep a lid on it for now until we sweep the November election.

12. the 1998 bill said nothing about pre emptive strikes, it was a sign of
support for opposition groups and organizations, inside and outside of Iraq, and among the world community. It was a diplomatic tool. Regime change in the Bush* lexicon came to mean pre-emptive unilateral invasion. There's a big difference.

5. We ALL wanted regime change in Iraq prior to 9/11
Clinton said he wanted it, the former Bush admin obviously wanted it. The only disagreement was "how?".

This doesn't really add or subtract from the O'Neil story.

6. Maybe had the Bush Admin focused on Al-Qaeda
instead of Saddam, they could have prevented 9/11. We might need to hammer this point home.
