1. Can he do this?
Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 02:51 AM by Sapphocrat
I know Arpaio gets away with murder (so to speak), but can he do this, legally?

On edit: I guess he can. And while I suppose there's nothing technically wrong with forcing inmates to comply with the Selective Service (never mind what I think about the SS itself), I realize the real reason this grates on me at all is that I can't stand Arpaio.

2. Sounds like
empressment. The British Navy used to get people drunk and then drag them on board ship and voila! Same principle.

9. No, because all males over 18
in the United States are required by law to register with the selective service administration. If he were actually signing a contract for them and empressing them into the armed forces, then yes, that would be very disturbing. This is merely silly.

16. I'm guessing...
...that was a big "shanghai" spot?

(Apologies if "shanghai" as a verb is offensive to anyone -- I don't know if it is or not, but I'm sure if it is, someone will say so.)

18. That's right according to the legend.
Tun's Tavern was the birthplace of the USMC on Nov. 10, 1775. It was (& still is) located near the Philadelphia Navy Yard. It was where an able bodied young man could get plenty of free grog but then wake up aboard ship the next morning.

3. Sherriff Arpaio isn't worthy of the power he wields in Arizona
He assures himself of reelection regulary by thinking of new ways to torment the people in his charge, from the green baloney sandwiches, to striped uniforms, to chain gangs for everyone, etc., etc., etc.

This entertains and amuses and satiates a lower level of citizenry probably not too far from criminality itself. What other kind of people could take so much enjoyment from considering the prisoners living without air conditioning in tents in Arizona, working on chain gangs, and eating those tasty green baloney sandwiches?

This new power he has taken for himself is far more sadistic. He shouldn't have the ability to force these people to serve as cannon fodder for oridnarily insignifigant crimes.

7. French Foreign Legionesque
Maybe the U.S. should set up an American Foreign Legion. This might solve the prison overcrowding problems. (I think they should decriminalize drugs, to really solve the problem, but that's another issue. And, I'd like to wait on that until AFTER LIMBAUGH spends some time in the slammer.)

Here in France, I was just discussing it the other day with a neighbor, if you are convicted of a crime that isn't a murder or an attack on a human, you have the choice of joining the Foreign Legion. Five years of service, and the offence is wiped off your record.

Foreigners can join, and after five years of service they get citizenship.

But the trick is that it's an option . . . joining the army is not forced upon you. You can choose to go to jail instead.

I went to your website and saw the full story posted, but no link. Didn't see it on AZ Central.

I'm not doubting it, I'd just like to have the link to the original source.

13. LINK to origonal story

From the Article:

"There are about 500 undocumented immigrants housed in the county's jail system who have not complied with a 1980 federal law that requires all young men between 18 and 26 to register for the draft, regardless of their immigration status, Arpaio said. An additional 2,300 inmates, out of 8,700 total inmates, will also be ordered to register because they failed to do so earlier, Arpaio said. Arpaio will begin registering the inmates Wednesday at Tent City.

"I can't say that I've ever heard anything like this, but we do appreciate any effort toward compliance," said Dan Amon, a spokesman for the Selective Service System in Washington, D.C.

/snip/ I BET they "appreciate" the effort, specially when enlistment of recruits is not exactly booming !

More from the article:

Amon said, "I think your sheriff may be doing these individuals a favor because registering for the Selective Service is tied to a number of benefits including (citizenship). If they are illegals and they want to (legalize) their status, the first thing they would be asked is whether they registered for the Selective Service."

/snip/

Doing them a favor, hmm

right

In my small town, those who got busted for pot were given the chance to volunteer for the military to have the charges dismissed.≥

25. It didn't just happen to non-violent defendants, either
Those type of policies during Vietnam led to some really unstable people being sent over there, and coming back even worse off. I'm sure it didn't really help the war effort, either, since those kind of guys were a risk to everyone in their platoon.
