Uzbek plane crash kills 37
Tashkent - A Soviet-era passenger jet crashed near Tashkent late on Tuesday as it prepared to land in thick fog at the Uzbek capital's airport, killing 37 people including a senior UN official, officials and witnesses said.

"A Yak-40 airplane crashed in the proximity of Tashkent's airport during landing cycle. As a result, 32 passengers and five crew were killed," the government said in a statement. There were no reports of survivors.

The UN's top official in Uzbekistan was among those who died in a plane crash in Uzbekistan, the British Foreign Office announced early Wednesday.

Richard Conroy, a 56-year-old British-Australian citizen, also an official with the UN Development Programme, was based in Tashkent.
