Boeing 787 hit by security fears
Source: BBC NEWS

Boeing has been ordered to ensure passengers on its new 787 Dreamliner jet cannot hack into the flight system and take control of the plane.

The ruling has come from America's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is concerned that the plane's computer system may be vulnerable.

Boeing said it was in constant dialogue with the FAA to resolve the issue.

The US giant will start to deliver the mid-sized planes from November. British Airways has ordered 24 Dreamliners.

3. How is someone going to hack into the planes computer system?
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 08:15 PM by RC
By a passenger plugging his laptop into the arm rest? Surely there can't be a wireless network for the planes computers.

Edit:
Maybe like in the movies, a terrorist using a P.A. or Blackberry...?

4. From another article:

http://www.newsday.com/technology/wire/sns-ap-787-computer-security,0,5566467.story

Before Boeing Co.'s new 787 jetliner gets the green light to fly passengers, the aircraft maker will have to prove that offering
Internet access in the cabin won't leave the flight controls vulnerable to hackers and hijackers.
Boeing claims it has engineered safeguards to shut out unauthorized users, but some security analysts worry navigation and communications systems could be vulnerable.

"The odds of this being perfect are zero," said Bruce Schneier, chief technology officer at the security services firm BT Counterpane. "It's possible Boeing can make their connection to the Internet secure. If they do, it will be the first time in mankind anyone's done that."

But Boeing spokeswoman Lori Gunter said 787's aviation electronics "are not connected in any way to the Internet."
Boeing has designed the 787 to allow airlines to offer passengers more in-flight entertainment and Internet options than previous planes have allowed.

Those new features and other aspects of 787's computer network go beyond the scope of existing regulations, so the Federal Aviation Administration is requiring Boeing to show the new technology won't pose a safety threat.

7. Physical Isolation
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 09:46 PM by Pavulon
aircraft ,I would presume, have avionic systems that are physically isolated from any passenger data.

Data does not move through the same wire, is not handled by the same hardware.

6. It makes one wonder if 911 planes were taken over by
computers??? and it makes the case that it is possible

8. Negative
they were taken over by saudis. This was confirmed. The 76 and 75 aircraft have flight voice and data recordings of the assholes that killed 3000 innocent people.

The 757 does not have electronic "fly by wire" systems

It makes no case. This article is written for the ignorant, by the ignorant.

9. I like fly-by-wire.
Steel wires to flight controls! Like my MD-80 had.

13. Actually, I had almost 8000 hours in the Boeing 737 series.
And I did, indeed, lose the "A" Hydraulic system one night, inbound to PHL. Anyone with a 737 type knows the A/B gouge:

"A" System:
Gear
Inboard Flight Spoilers
Nose-wheel Steering
Alternate Brakes
AutoPilot "A"

That final approach was the hardest I've ever flown! Half the flight control hydraulics were out. Thank god there was not a cross wind. That B-737 was a bitch to land! The MD-80 was much more forgiving.

14. I got buffaloed into flying raw data on an MD-90 level D....
...and the instructor kept failing stuff from the IOS and was laughing giddily. (Think you have it under control? Here have some runaway trim).

15. I did like the way the MD80/90 landed!
And after so many hours in the B-737, I loved the way the MD-80 slowed-down. Slats out at 250 kias, if I remember correctly! But the back end! The hell-hole for the passengers! 2+3. Bad LAVS.

16. Yeah but they're profitable....
...a friend of mine is an FO on one and he felt very uncomfortable at Op Spec limits (37000'). He said the two bars got awfully close to one another and the controls got mushy.

17. That's way up in coffin corner.
That's where a couple of "Spirit" MD-80 pilots got in deep trouble a few years back. They did not understand weight vs. altitude.
