Religious left creates lobby to oust Bush from White House
Religious left creates lobby to oust Bush from White House

Tue Jan 13, 8:52 PM ET

Add Politics - AFP to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON, (AFP) - A new lobby recently opened an office near the US
Congress, but instead of sporting designer suits, its disciples wear
clerical collars: They belong to the religious left and say their top goal
is to oust President George. W Bush from the White House.

Ten months before Americans vote in the 2004 presidential election, a group
of liberal priests have created the Clergy Leadership Network in a bid to
counter the powerful influence of conservative religious groups in the
American capital.

The so-called religious right played a key role in Bush's election victory
in 2000, and the rise of the religious left suggests issues like gay
marriage and abortion could be hotly debated as the presidential campaign
gears up.

2. 20 years too late is better than never
Republicans have shamelessly (and successfully) been using Jesus's name to get votes since Reagan's day.

3. We don't need to buy back America
That's the WRONG way to win back America. What we (the "democratic" party) need is genuine connectivity with the America people. I don't want to go to my ignorant-of-politics non-voting neighbor and say: "Buy your voice back" I want to say "Hears a megaphone".

To believe that the "left" is going to use the contaminating weapon of lobbying only to the betterment of a real democratic society is complete nonsense. Only votes and accountability in the government truly represent the people. The fact that the media-labelled left seeks money to buy influence in Washington only goes to show how little they connect with the American people.

It's not just that heavy lobbying is destroying the democratic fabric of our society from the right, it is also that we have these aristocratic sons-of-bitches in Washington believe they have some right to be there and sell there nonexistant points-of-view to the highest bidder. That's the bigger problem!

4. Jesus was really was in principle a communist
Karl Marx himself, though born Jewish, was baptized. His wife, Jenny who came from the minor aristocracy was also a christian. European philosohers like Jacques Ellul and Revel among others have all traced the roots of Marx's philosophies to his christian roots --despite his critiques of religion.

Being Christian <real christians--not the perverted fundie sort> and left is not at all antithetical in my view. Only in America where people don't know anything about either have christianity and communism been placed as polar opposites. Good for the christian left! May they set the record straight about both the teachings of Jesus and the socio-political realities.

7. There is a "Jesus was a socielist" TShirt you know
It has ten reasons and/or quotes from the bible showing it. I'd like to have one, but there is no fucking way I would wear it here in the South. I'd get shot.

13. Dean "found Jesus" because the voters demand it
Many American voters want the president to be a Christian like them. As both Bill Clinton and GW Bush have demonstrated, you don't have to be sincere in your beliefs, you just have to say the right words to pander to those voters. Dean is just playing the game. I wish it weren't that way, but it is.

17. Yes and that
Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 03:08 PM by Jawja
is exactly what has disappointed me recently about Howard Dean. I want a leader who doesn't throw out God and Religion in order to get votes. That is one of the main reasons I am so against Lieberman.

To see Howard Dean do it after he appeared to be such a "maverick" sickened me and turned me away from his camp.

Certainly, the Republican HAS to do it. Remember what happened to John McCain when he criticized Falwell and Robertson and the hold of the "religious" reich on the GOP? They HAVE to pander to the religious folks, because the right wing fundies run their party.

But the Democrats DON'T. I am looking to the Dems to offer an alternative to the butt kissing of people who demand that the President be a so-called "Christian." We see where that has gotten us. Instead of a true spiritual leader, as with Jimmy Carter, who didn't use his religion to get votes, we get a thug and a fanatic like George W. Bush* who has used religion to get power and and is using religion to keep it; and not only keep power, but using it as an excuse to kill people.

on edit: spelling, spelling, spelling.

12. What a horribly written and edited article
The "reporter" can't write, and the editors are incompetent. Misspellings, misunderstandings (not all clergy are "priests"). Sorry. I hope the group makes an impact, but this is one of the worst written articles I have seen. I support them wholeheartedly, but geez, get somebody who can write to do this kind of article next time.

18. "Liberal priests" "so-called religious right"
Could the U.S. media favor Bush a little more?

Anyone who disagrees with Bush is a "liberal".

Anyone who supports Bush is a "voter" or an "American".

We need our own mainstream media outlets.

21. Anyone who votes for the chimp and the chump
has no business claiming to be a Christian.

No way can the lies, deceptions, manipulations, dissembling, etc., ever be justified by spiritual principles.

As Jesus said: "the thief does not come, but to steal, kill and destroy."
