A A pilot and crew detained in Brazil and refused entry to
the country upon disembarking at the Sao Paulo airport. The crew was being subjected to the new processing requirements of fingerprinting and photographing. The AA pilot disgreed to procedures and according to todays O Globo, www.oglobo.com.br the pilot made disgreeable gestures and the entire crew refused to be documented. The crew is being held along with 12 other detainees in a holding area and is scheduled to leave the country in 12 hours.

1. turnabout is fair play
I feel bad for the pilots and crew, but I also feel bad for Brazilians trying to legally enter the US.

Air crew held over obscene gesture

From correspondents in Sao Paulo, Brazil
January 15, 2004

AN American Airlines pilot has been detained by federal police after making an obscene gesture when being photographed at the airport, as part of a newly imposed entry requirement for US citizens.

/snip/

It was not immediately clear if the crew was detained for laughing at the pilot's gesture or whether they refused to submit to the fingerprinting and photographing required by Brazil for US citizens since January 1.

/snip/ Frigadee - were they asking for it !!

Meanwhile, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has asked US President George W Bush to drop the visa requirement for Brazilians entering the United States.

In a statement issued by the foreign ministry, Brazil said the requirement could lead to a souring between the two nations.

/end/

The pilot and crew have accelerated an International Incident -

Like Junior needs more of these !!

And the arrogance and disrespect will not go unnoticed by the Brazilian people as well -

Better hide them American flags in Brazil - ain't making no friends there !!

Sheesh - I can't get over the STUPIDITY of this crew !!

7. great link...
crews are going to be calling out sick for Brazil trips and the trips will be going to the reserve crews.

The airlines will have to work overtime on this one. Can't imagine the pain of working 12 hours to sit in a detention room or a long processing line. And the crew would be into their rest time. Some companies only give the flight attendants 9 hours to rest before working the leg back to base. I guess the AA flight will be cancelled tonight because of lack of legal rest for the crew unless they have an extra crew sitting around. They way the airlines have been running minimal staff I doubt they have extra crew sitting in Brazil. They have got to be sweating bullets with the company on these regulations right now. I bet the schedulers and managers at AA will ask the crew to work the trip back to the states.

8. Reciprocity is pretty common practice.
There's no basis for the US to complain about actions taken as a result of reciprocity.

9. reaping what we sow...
it figures that the rest of the world will treat us as terrorists, since that's the way we treat the rest of the world, and many US Citizens (Greens) as well.

11. BBC Link Here
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3397183.stm

Some minor story differences:

An American Airlines pilot has been detained in Brazil after making an obscene gesture when photographed on arrival, Brazilian police have said.

The pilot was being photographed at Sao Paulo airport in line with new entry requirements for US citizens.

..

American Airlines spokeswoman Martha Pantin denied that the pilot had been detained but said he and the plane's crew were still at the airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Hehehe.
