SOLOMONS PM IN HIDING
SOLOMONS PM IN HIDING

The prime minister of the Solomon Islands has gone into hiding pending the arrival of an Australian-led peace-keeping force.

Allan Kemakeza's location will remain secret until the peacekeepers begin deploying in 24 hours' time in an attempt to restore order in the near-bankrupt South Pacific nation.

"There are fears there may be a last attempt" by former ethnic militia members to derail the intervention force, one government official was quoted as saying.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp reported that Kemakeza had left on a patrol boat amid fears of a kidnap attempt.
Solomon's media said a rebel group might have been planning to assassinate him.

1. Weren't The Solomons on that long list
of the "Coalition of the Willing?" Are their troops in Iraq? What now that the PM is out of commission?

2. problem?
What is the problem in the Solomons? I heard something about this 2 weeks or so ago, but wasn't listening all that closely. Why are the gov't and services falling apart?

Am aware the Solomons are a developing country, but they're quite a small one, and I thought that it had been relatively successful as far as developing countries go, for 20 or more years.

What happened? Corruption? Internecine conflict? Political rivalry? Debt burden? Other?
