'Miami Herald' Won't Outsource Editorial After All
Source: Editor & Publisher

Published: January 15, 2008 7:50 AM ET

MIAMI The McClatchy Co., which announced in December it would experiment with outsourcing some production of The Miami Herald's "Broward Neighbors" sections to an India firm, has canceled that project, th Herald reported Monday.

''We've decided this would not be an appropriate use of this service so it won't be tested, nor will other newsroom and editing design like it,'' wrote Miami Herald Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal in a staff memo Jan. 14. "The more we looked at the prospects of editing and layout from outside the newsroom, the more it was clear these skills involving news judgment and experience are not likely to work well from afar."

The brief item in the paper concluded: "Other outsourcing projects, such as the production of some advertising sections and monitoring of website comments, will continue. The Sacramento-based McClatchy has been testing outsourcing at its other papers, including some advertising production at its flagship Sacramento Bee."

Nice to hear, however they should ditch all of the outsourcing projects.

1. it's a shame ... because we all know those writers in India know more about
what's going on 2 miles down the road than the actual residents ...

4. They never proposed outsourcing writing.
The plan was to outsource some editing and layout work, production of some advertising sections and monitoring of website comments. The overseas production of some ad sections and monitoring of website comments will go forward.

The Miami Herald to outsource ad work to India

December 27, 2007 3:24 PM ET

MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Herald is outsourcing some of its advertising production work to India.

Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal says starting in January, copyediting and design in a weekly section of Broward County community news and other special advertising sections will be outsourced to Mindworks, based in New Delhi.

The project is still in the testing phase, so there is no immediate impact on staff.

Mindworks will also monitor reader comments posted to online stories.

6. Monitoring reader comments is not the same as writing.
It's basically a moderating job, just as DU moderators monitor DUers posts and replies.

2. Translation:
Management still has to live here, and having to use dental records to identify the bodies all the time would be a pain.

3. Some things just cannot be outsourced.
Finally -- some good, old common sense.

"The more we looked at the prospects of editing and layout from outside the newsroom, the more it was clear these skills involving news judgment and experience are not likely to work well from afar."

No shit, Sherlock.
:wow:
