Huck: We Need To Amend The Constitution, Bring It In Line With God
Source: Talking Points Memo

At a Michigan campaign event last night, Mike Huckabee gave an interesting reason for why he wants to amend the Constitution to ban both abortion and gay marriage: Otherwise, the Constitution would be in conflict with God.

Huckabee first observed that some of his opponents don't want to amend the Constitution on both of these topics. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God," Huckabee said. "And that's what we need to do, is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards."

1. And only Huck knows what God wants
So vote for Huck, or you hate God.

"There is no God but God, and Huckabee is his prophet", summerizes it up nicely, I think...

97. Wishful thinking! This country has already allowed "faith-based"...
...programs which are heavily funded and which are in complete contradictio to the principle of separation of church and state.

We all need to become more aware of what is involved in the National Prayer Breakfast and The Fellowship that is behind it. Who could be against prayer? you might say. What The Fellowship espouses is very scary.

"This country" is no longer what we fondly remember from days of yore....sadly!

Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 09:39 PM by roguevalley
It took immigration of people from other places, television (no joke) and young people coming to their senses. I cannot express how biblically stupid this place used to be. It would be equal to living in Jerry Falwell's pantry. If this place can change, everywhere can.

now with warmer weather --- !!!

How much weather change are you feeling there?

As someone has said . . . "No one said religion was good for mental health!" ---

I have some ex-in-laws of my son's living in Jerry Falwell land --
amazing how many people are comfortable with that!!!

Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 06:08 PM by defendandprotect
but when the reigns of power are taken over by fanatics --- a la Bush/Cheney --- and I'd include Huck, in that --- then what the public wants whether no war, or no draining of our Treasury,
or no attacks on Social Security or Medicare doesn't matter!

These fanatics just go on and our Congress is NOT responding . . . but I think we've all noticed that, haven't we?????????????????????????????

Specifically, when Congress lets go of their power to declare war and turns it over to the White House, then we have a system that is broken --- and broken by the dishonest people among us.

THIS should have been preventable --- !!!

174. I agree with you, and happily stand corrected.
This harks back to the accusations made against the citizens of Germany, Japan, Italy to the effect that their national character deficiencies allowed tyrrany to take root. We could look at our own character deficiencies, but the Constitution and the Bill of rights should protect our democracy from our own failings as citizens! We the People have been shunted aside for corporate/religious interests and, as you point out, the dishonest fanatics among us who want to impose their own narrow worldview on the whole country.

I feel *so* betrayed by the Dems we elected in 2006, who were going to turn things around. We need the essence of a "D-Day Invasion" in our politics (speaking as the daughter of a man who was involved in that invasion in France).

Thanks for weighing in!

193. Yes . . . I used to really look down on the German people for seemingly
having stood by while all that was going on ---
but finally, as we can see here, we're all being tortured by this administration ---
the world is being tortured by them--!!

There are just too many ways to corrupt a people's government ---
and Bush/Cheney have certainly gotten their fingers onto the right levers to do it!!
PLUS we have this infuriating Congress which does nothing!!!
The most important thing they could do would be to impeach Bush/Cheney ---

There were, of course, religious elements in Germany's failures --- it was a 90% Christian nation --- !!! I think about 70% Catholic and heavily influenced by the Pope.
I remember the poet Gertrude Stein saying that their problem was "being obedient."
Religous training does that to you.

Stein had been in France during the war years and she went in immediately actually to talk with and study the people.

Don't know if you read Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" --- I really haven't read all of it yet --- got thru first chapters --- and then went to "conclusions."
However, like Latin America, the people have to organize and have MANY, MANY leaders.
Too easy for them to knock over just a few here and there. Look at the 1960's . . .
boom years for assassinations!!

These people can only have come to power thru political violence and stolen elections ---
and these computers came in during the mid-1960's!!!

"Well, what do you really object to in my treatment of the Jews?
I have certainly been consistent --
I am doing what the Catholic Church has already done for fifteen centuries.
The difference between the church and me is that I am finishing the job.
Adolph Hitler quote from "Confronting anti-Semitism"

Just as Nixon and his administration studied Nazi propaganda films --
Hitler also studied the Vatican and its rituals ---
They both had a similar list of enemies ---
and, in common, their use of females as breeders ---

Hitler also suggested that he had learned about concentration camps from the US government's
treatement of the native American --- i.e., confining them to reservations.

IMO, much of Catholic Church PROPAGANDA -- ceremony/rituals can be seen in Hitler's presentations/rallies --- and in our current GOP politics!!

The Vatican, of course, was involved in hundreds of years of propaganda ---
against the Jews, of course, with vile, vile writings --
but also against females --- "The Hammer of Witches" ---

224. Fucking "A"...... Praise & kudos to Jesus
Jerry Boykin will lead the march.

* Speaking of Somali militia leader Osman All Otto, captured in 1993: "I knew that my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol." After this comment started drawing flak, Boykin backpedaled: "Comments to Osman Otto in Mogadishu were not referencing his worship of Allah but his worship of money and power; idolatry."

* Regarding the convoluted election of President George W. Bush: "Why is this man in the White House? The majority of Americans did not vote for him. He's in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this." On another occasion, Boykin put it this way: "George Bush was not elected by a majority of the voters in the United States. He was appointed by God."

* In a slideshow program he presented at various church groups, Boykin showed a photo he had taken from a helicopter over Mogadishu in 1993 depicting black patches in the sky. "Whether you understand it or not, it is a demonic spirit over the city of Mogadishu. Ladies and gentlemen, that's not a fake, that's not a farce."

* Another comment from the slideshow: "Well, is he (Osama bin Laden) the enemy? Next slide. Or is this man (Saddam Hussein) the enemy? The enemy is none of these people I have showed you here. The enemy is a spiritual enemy. He's called the principality of darkness. The enemy is a guy called Satan."

Regarding this last point, magician and celebrity atheist Penn Jillette responded thusly:

A guy? A guy? A guy named "Satan." We can't even find a guy named Bin Laden, and now we're looking for an evil tooth fairy? Satan's not a guy, it's just someone else's imaginary friend. How did we end up fighting a war against a sock monkey?

and there's many more of them out there than most people think. They are a force to be dealt with. They're covertly infiltrating every aspect of our government, thanks to the Bush administration, and DO plan to take over this country one way or another.

These freaking nutballs scare me to death. There's not an independent thinker in the bunch. It's all group-think, many minds thinking as one, and THAT is dangerous. Extremely dangerous. :scared:

You cant run a country
By a book of religion

Not by a heap
Or a lump or a smidgeon

Of foolish rules
Of ancient date

Designed to make
You all feel great

While you fold, spindle
And mutilate

Those unbelievers
From a neighboring state

Step #1 should be to stop catering to them. Home school? Sorry, no more home schooling unless the parent has any and all relevant degrees and is certified to teach all required subjects in their state.

100. I know that
My mom said she'd considered home schooling me and my siblings, because she could do a better job of it. What she couldn't do is provide the social environment that schools do. I should point out that she is also a certified teacher with a Ph.D.

So, yeah, let people home school if they have the degree to back it up. We don't allow people to decide their own building codes or drunk driving laws.... a child's future is just as important.

129. Totally agree. Home schooling ranges from
very competent people who are conscientious and involved to parents with very little personal education whose teaching is a form of child abuse. Their children are denied a decent education and have their lives stunted due to parental ego.
I am reminded of the mother in "Jesus Camp" whose science class for her home-schooled son consisted of her ranting about how global warming is a myth perpetrated by the godless. Her teaching was all about herself and her beliefs. The selfishness of it is appalling.

it took quite a while for me to get up the courage to stomach it. Needless to say, I was appalled by it, totally stunned. It was so deeply disturbing on so many levels. I can't imagine what those children will grow up to be like. :scared: The hate and guilt those parents are heaping upon those small children will resurface as something extremely ugly later in life. They're creating mindless little monsters. I fear for their future, IF they have one.

At least I know that they're Christian, don't have full college degrees, and they home school their kids.... but what can you do? Oh, yeah - no home schooling for anyone!

Ammendment to ban Abortions.

Since it most likely the Supreme Court will let the "settled law"

pass Consitutional Ammendment.

Quite creative. Do not upset people with the Abortion word.

At first glance I can see how he could appeal to some people. He plays the harmless act well. But, what I've been hearing is his flat tax was a turn off for many of those people. I'm thinking his desire to mold the Constitution into a document that supports Theocracy will also be a turn off.

149. Actually
there is no requirement in law to use a Bible or any other book of any type in the swearing-in ceremony. It's merely tradition, just like adding "so help me God" at the end (which many presidents didn't do and Lincoln actually refused to do). In fact John Quincy Adams placed his hand on a book of law and Theordore Roosevelt used no book of any type at his 1901 inauguration.

This guy is practically admitting he wants to change the Constitution to pave the way for a fundamentalist theocracy. Sure, he'll get the rabid fundie vote, and probably a lot of the idiot UnFair Tax supporters. But that seems about it.

Never have, never will.

His comments in Michigan disqualify Huckleberry from serving as president of these United States, completely and forever, yet the GOP will never repudiate them. In fact, the GOP long ago sold out their oath of office ("...support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies...") for the votes of a small yet rabid and easily mobilized minority who genuinely want to establish state religion in this country. If this man, or anyone who believes as he does, should ever become president, you might as well flush what's left of the republic right down the tubes and out to sea.

"We" amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards? Come on. Sounds like SOMEBODY'S going to have to determine WHO has the real, authoritative line to God in order to rewrite this thing... Step right up and interpret the Constitution on behalf of God.

No.

I think if the Constitution is going to be amended so it's in God's standards, then we ought to do this: Set the Constitution and a pencil on a rock in the desert, 50 miles from any road, 50 miles from any people, and let God rewrite it herself/himself. When people begin acting like they are speaking for God, that's when I begin to worry.

132. but how do we know what are God standards?
What if the real Gods are the gods of the Greeks? What if the dictates of Zeus, Aphrodite, or Ares are what matters?

What if the real Gods are the Orishas of Nigerian / Afro-Cuban culture? What if Chango, Yemaya, Ochun, etc. are the ones whose dictates we should follow?

What if it's not a God at all...it's a Goddess? A Goddess of Nature?

How could we, in all fairness, dictate "standards" of a particular God on others through amending the Constitution to make it impose those values?

I thought that was what the first Americans were fleeing Europe for...to avoid state-enforced religions.

Voting for Huckabee is a vote to making the U.S. the Europe of the 1400s.

For me it's nothing more than arrogance to argue that Jesus is the only God. how do we know, really! Because a book said so? Hey, guess what, the Koran's a book! The Torah's a book. The Greek Gods have books about them. Santeros have practices/rituals that have been passed down on how to worship their Gods. Who has the audacity to claim absolute knowledge on what God is right and what practices should be the "standard"?

No one does....and that is why our present Constitution works fine with most, if not any faith out there.

What is wrong with these Christian Talibanists!

Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 08:02 PM by usregimechange
It is an unfortunate fact of history that when some of the very groups which had most strenuously opposed the established Church of England found themselves sufficiently in control of colonial governments in this country to write their own prayers into law, they passed laws making their own religion the official religion of their respective colonies. 9 Indeed, as late as the time of the Revolutionary <370 U.S. 421, 428> War, there were established churches in at least eight of the thirteen former colonies and established religions in at least four of the other five. 10 But the successful Revolution against English political domination was shortly followed by intense opposition to the practice of establishing religion by law. This opposition crystallized rapidly into an effective political force in Virginia where the minority religious groups such as Presbyterians, Lutherans, Quakers and Baptists had gained such strength that the adherents to the established Episcopal Church were actually a minority themselves. In 1785-1786, those opposed to the established Church, led by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, who, though themselves not members of any of these dissenting religious groups, opposed all religious establishments by law on grounds of principle, obtained the enactment of the famous "Virginia Bill for Religious Liberty" by which all religious groups were placed on an equal footing so far as the State was concerned. 11 Similar though less far-reaching <370 U.S. 421, 429> legislation was being considered and passed in other States.

ENGEL v. VITALE, 370 U.S. 421 (1962)

187. That's not an amendment, that's an overhaul
Because he means the Christian God of love who burns people in hell because they didn't believe in him. And our Constitution is humanistic to the core. We sure have in-bred some crazy, stupid people here in America. Huckabee case in point.

209. Doesn't this statement essentially disqualify him as a presidential candidate?
He's essentially stating he intends to ignore the First Amendment, yet as president he has to swear to protect and uphold the Constitution. That means the whole document, not just the parts he agrees with.

I know, I know, the last seven years we've had a president who's been violating his solemn oath, but my point still makes sense, I hope.

211. Perhaps we also need to amend reality...
and bring it in line with Christofascist ideology! This pseudo-religious posturing is a knife in the gut of this democracy.

Huckabee is a yet another rancid nut in the Republican fruitcake.

212. Prove to me the existence of "God", and then we can talk.
I tell all who "praise God" to prove the existence of said "God", and then I'd be willing to talk about it.

Has anyone ever seen this "God" guy? Nope. And I believe nobody ever will.

In the mean time, us reality based people must continue to fend off the superstitious when it comes to running the everyday world.

213. In A Way, It's A Pity
Too bad the guy is a theocratic nut -- his economic policies are actually pretty good for a Pubbie. (Note that the right-wing slime machine from Fox to El Rushbo makes a blatant attempt to distort and destroy him. All appear to be following marching orders from the Republican hierarchy apparently to pander their rich contributors.)
