NTSB Finds Design Flaw Caused Minneapolis
Bridge Collapse

January 15, 2008: 02:41 PM EST

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Undersized gusset plates
in the Interstate 35-W bridge in Minneapolis were "the
critical factor" in the bridge collapse last year that killed
13 people and injured 100, the National Transportation
Safety Board said Tuesday.

Chairman Mark Rosenker said the plates, which connected
steel beams, were roughly half the thickness they should
have been because of a design error. Investigators found
16 fractured gusset plates from the bridge's center span,
he said.

"It is the undersizing of the design which we believe is
the critical factor here. It is the critical factor that
began the process of this collapse. That's what failed,"
Rosenker said.

The Minneapolis bridge was a steel-deck truss bridge that
opened in 1967. Rosenker said it wasn't clear how the
design flaw made it into the bridge because investigators
couldn't find the design calculations.

1. A design flaw or a money saving change for the bridge builder?
this should be looked into and if there was some sort of tit for tat it should be punished

2. The fact they were rusted to hell because of no maintenance money
might've had something to do with it too.

Sounds like passing the buck.

4. design flaw
A review of the contract specification should tell whether the design was faulty, or the contractor did not follow the contract.

5. In MN.. Design my ass.. what a joke
The Asshole Gov. was previously the State Senator who block funding for Transporation.
He wouldn't match state funds with Fed funds.... and lost the Fed funds to keep up the roads.

He is another jackass like the one in the Whitehouse.

"Doing a heck uv a job Timmy". He is now going around campaigning for McCain.

The Head of DOT needs to resign. and the Gov kicked out of office
