WASHINGTON - A senior career CIA officer has been appointed to a key State Department position dealing with North Korea, a move which experts say may be intended to reinforce a tough US position towards Pyongyang.
Mr Joseph DeTrani has replaced Mr Charles Pritchard, who resigned last August after policy differences with the Bush administration.
Last week, Mr DeTrani made a rare direct call to North Korea to resume multilateral talks on ending its nuclear weapons development. He delivered the message to Mr Pak Gil Son, North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, at a brief introductory meeting.
