Guardian UnlimitedWASHINGTON, Jan 16 (Reuters) - A legislative package designed to stimulate the slumping U.S. economy could be passed by Congress and signed into law by President George W. Bush within a month, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said on Wednesday.
"I think it can be done in 30 days," Hoyer told reporters, though cautioning there was no certainty. He was optimistic, however, saying: "Bipartisanship is breaking out all over."
Congressional leaders and President Bush are expected to meet soon to discuss legislation that could include tax rebates for workers with the aim of putting more money in people's pockets to spend.
Without giving any specifics, Hoyer said a number of alternatives were being discussed.
"The bottom line ... is that we have no preconditions in which we are going to discuss this with the administration," said Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat.
But he added there there was no consideration of coupling a economic stimulus package with any tax increase.
