Zogby: "...Dean is NOT in Free Fall"
You have to look at what Zogby says as well as what he reports. He set up Dean's drop yesterday by giving us a heads up that Monday's numbers were out of the norm. Now he reminds us that we shouldn't read too much into Dean's drop today because "...Dean is NOT in a free fall." His emphasis, not mine.

Dean is doing fine. It is a close race. It will boil down to organization, as always.

<snip>
This race is actually a four-way statistical dead heat.

Kerry leads among singles and college educated, but Dean is NOT in a free fall. Gephardt still has the organization, but do not count out Edwards, who leads in the Central part of the state and is running strong among college graduates."
</snip>

Zogby is more accurate that most pollsters...

6. The Real Story: Gephardt is over
I'm sorry, he's been running for President in Iowa for over a decade. People have an excellent idea of who Dick Gephardt is and what he stands for, and if he is someone they would support.

He's got excellent labor support and organization. And he's going nowhere.

The only question is: who will Gephardt back, and will that endorsement mean much to his largely-labor base? If he endorses a Democratic unknown like Clark, I don't necessarily see the unions following his lead.

7. Free fall?
Who ever said, he was? The race is tightening, as I believe most thoughtful commentators would have expected. The idea that the opposite was true and the race was already over and Dr. Dean was the nominee wasn't ever the case. That's all the poll numbers are indicating. The average voter in these things doesn't even start to pay attention till after Xmas/New Years and even some folks would say the Super Bowl. Plus, as we all know from experience the media loves a horse race between 2 or 3 candidates and will do everything it can to promote one. So, stay tuned this is just getting started.

8. You can bet your bottom dollar...
That the large majority of these "free fall" stories are coming out of the Gephardt and Lieberman campaigns, using the DC press contacts that they have developed over the years. They exploit the fact that the DC press corps is largely a lazy waste of skin and gravity and don't do any research to find corroborating evidence for these claims.

It speaks volumes about the quality of the press corps and the quality of both Gep's and Holy Joe's campaigns. Pitiful, on all counts. While I am at it, Al From desperately needs a High Colonic with a running chainsaw.
