Afghan ministry upholds singer ban
Thursday 15 January 2004, 16:31 Makka Time, 13:31 GMT

Afghanistan's US-backed government has re-imposed a ban preventing women singing on state television just days after it was lifted.

The decision to restore the ban followed a protest from the Supreme Court, officials said on Thursday.

On Monday, Kabul Television featured old footage of Parasto performing without a headscarf, a well-known singer who now lives in the West.

The ministry responsible for broadcasting said the move was in line with a newly approved constitution giving "equal rights" for women to sing and dance publicly.

I'd like to hear some reporter question the administration about this, considering how the administration went on and on about the mistreatment of women in Afghanistan. Do they really care?? Where is their compassion? Par for the course I guess.

2. Laura "Pickles" Bush says Afghani women have been liberated.

Maybe Pickles can give the minister a call and ask him what's up.

3. May the gods and goddesses --
-- bring Janis Joplin back to life so she can do a Concert for Afghanistan. Twenty nights straight at Madison Square Garden, packed houses. The Allman Brothers lend their lead guitars. The Stones do the rhythm section and Jagger backs up the vocals -- if he can hold on.

The proceeds go to any relief agency in the world that can give women in Afghanistan a fair shot at true citizenship.
