White House Seeks Control on Health, Safety
Edited on Thu Jan-15-04 12:11 PM by yellowcanine
WASHINGTON - Under a new proposal, the White House
would decide what and when the public would be told about
an outbreak of mad cow disease, an anthrax release, a
nuclear plant accident or any other crisis.

The White House Office of Management and Budget is trying
to gain final control over release of emergency declarations
from the federal agencies responsible for public health, safety
and the environment.

The OMB also wants to manage scientific and technical
evaluations - known as peer reviews - of all major
government rules, plans, proposed regulations and
pronouncements.

1. can't they apply this to terror -- like "facts" -- propaganda
the request on health issues is scary that they can't control the news...why do they not want an informed public on any facts---only on propaganda

2. Pretty scary thought. I wonder if he will mention THAT in his SOTU.
If they have their way, we could have "outbreaks" for weeks and they will tell us when they feel like it. This is bull shit.

3. Apparently Bush wants to filter the news from his own administration
Bush doesn't trust his own politically appointed Department Secretaries to report on the scientific findings of their departments. This has to be a first. Does anyone know whether it is legal for OMB to do this?

5. The Dubya WH wants to disarm America ...
when it comes to threats to life or health, particularly if those doing the threatening are big contributors to the GOP. Dubya would like nothing so much as to have the WH be THE authority on public health, and on science in general.
