Bush: 'Serious Signs' Economy is Weakening
Source: ABC News

President George W. Bush today expressed his strongest concerns to date over the economy and urged Congress to act by passing an economic stimulus package, following a government report showing a decline last month in the number of American jobs.

Hours after the release of a Labor Department report that 17,000 workers had left the nation's payrolls in January — in stunning contradiction of economists' expectations of growth in jobs — the president acknowledged the growing threat to the nation's economy, but avoided using the word "recession."

"There are certainly troubling signs — serious signs — the economy is weakening, and we've got to do something about it," Bush said in a speech at Hallmark Cards Inc. in Kansas City. "And today we got such a sign when, after 52 consecutive months of job creation, we lost 17,000 jobs. The unemployment went down, but nevertheless the serious matter is that for the first time in 52 months that we didn't create jobs. The question is: what do we do about it?"

He said there are "constructive measures that we can take," in reference to the $146 billion economic stimulus package he negotiated with the House earlier this week.

"One way to address that issue is to have a temporary robust tax rebate," Bush said. "And that's what we're working on in Congress."

that was gold in this country and turned it to shit: Foreign policy, war, our image and standing in the world, our military readiness, and now our economy. Reverse Midas. His job is done.

5. Gee, his party set up conditions to rob 99.5% of us
and transfer the wealth to the other 0.5% of us and he thinks the economy might be weakening a little?

This is why we all need to vote these fucking clowns out of office and keep them out for the rest of our lives.

9. Don't be fooled by his sudden interest. This is political blather to smack the Dems with.
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 03:01 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
Since I'm fluent in political blather I'll translate: How dare those Senate Democrats attempt to change the stimulus plan to include extended unemployment benefits! Don't they know times-a-wasting? Those roadblock Democrats are putting politics ahead of the economy and standing between you good people and your rebates! If we do fall into a recession now it is the fault of those Democrats!

14. Gee
Remember how he insisted about tax cuts but wouldn't give us a decision on going to war until he had his tax cuts, and then the second that passed all of a sudden it was war with Iraq?

Hmmm... I wonder how we could have gotten in this situation... ?

15. I guess he just woke up from his latest drunk.
I have never been one who has ever seen the economy as good even when it was supposed to be good. All I have seen since chimpy-mcflightsuit took office was things go from bad to worse to terrifying! And you won't see anyone mention that the unemployment numbers go down when people run out of benefits-not only when they get jobs.

How many days are left?

16. There can be no recession--we had those big tax cuts!
One month ago: The tax cuts is working! No recession! So what if milk is $5.00 a gallon and gas is $3.00 a gallon! Cut entitlements!Keep the tax cuts! Let the free market work!

Now: Recession!!! Not my fault, totally unforseeable. The government must intervene massively in the economy by sending everyone a check! The free market can only work with massive government intervention!

What changed to change his mind? The stock market, the only thing these bastards care about, went down a little.

29. Only three month of the last year have had enough job growth to cover population growth
It's convenient to ignore population growth and just talk about job growth. But if *'s economy doesn't add about 150K jobs a month, there are more people out of work at the end of the month.
