Vandals paint swastikas on Jewish graves in southern Hungary

Vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in southern Hungary over the weekend, painting swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans on two dozen graves, a Jewish leader said Monday.

It was the fourth time in the past year that the graveyard in Kaposvar, 190 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of Budapest, had been vandalized, said Laszlo Rona, leader of the city's Jewish community.

For decades we never had any similar incidents, Rona said, adding that they were planning to release guard dogs at night to protect the cemetery.

Soviet military cemetery and a Catholic cemetery in the area were also vandalized recently.

Rona said that despite reporting the vandalism to police each time, none of the culprits have been caught.

At least 57 tombstones in a large Jewish cemetery outside Norridge were defaced with anti-Semitic slogans last weekend in a vandalism spree that caused at least $100,000 in damage, Cook County police said.

Using white and blue spray paint, vandals drew swastikas and slurs on tombstones in a western section of the 72-acre Westlawn Cemetery, 7801 W. Montrose Ave., where roughly 46,000 people are buried. In one corner of the cemetery, a headstone inscribed with the words "Beloved husband & father" for a man who died at age 85 had a white swastika painted on a corner."

Why is this done?

Why would jews rather than any number of other creeds, ethnic groups or other people represent the "ultimate evil" or, more accurately, any kind of "evil" at all? There doesn't appear to me to be a rational explanation.

My random best-guess would be that Jews were the first "other" culture most Europeans had living near them, and that irrational dislike of Jews spread out from Europe. The Jews in China, for instance, where European influence didn't reach until relatively recently, were not persecuted (until the Revolution outlawed religion, but that's another story).

but then antisemitism continued after the Reformation. One would think it would be in decline with the advent of scientific and technological advances.

There is no one "jewish" view of the world, so that really cannot be an answer.

To an extent it is scapegoating, but many groups have been scapegoats at one time or another. Jews have seemed to be scapegoated more often and more consistently throughout history. It could be resentment at success, but there were many Lower East Side jews who never "succeeded" materially and that didn't seem to extinguish antisemitism.

If Israel would be a strive to be a beacon of hope instead of a dagger of injustice I think the reputations of Jews all over the world would improve dramatically. If the Jews don't like the way they are perceived maybe they could change the perception. Answering rocks with rockets is not going to make friends anywhere.

there's always a post like yours e.g. "But, but, but.... ISRAEL...." and "why does it have to be about the Jews?"

There are threads which report other hate crimes against other minorities. They stand on their own. There's no need to try and rationalise anti-Semitism by drawing a strawman argument that Jewish people are claiming to be the only ones to be victimised.

Antisemitism existed in Hungary LONG before the creation of the State of Israel. I have several friends whose parents or grandparents were refugees from antisemitism in Hungary. And I'm just referring to Hungary because it was in the OP - Hungary was no worse, and indeed in some ways better, than many other countries.

And neo-Nazis are active in many countries; and Jews are indeed only one of their targets - though an important one.

And most Jews don't live in Israel, so why should they be blamed for anything that Israel does? Would you excuse racism against African-Americans because certain African countries have bad leaders? Or prejudice against Polish-Americans because of the Kaczynskis; or Italian-Americans because of Berlusconi; or Chinese-Americans because of Mao and the current dubious government of China?
