Huckabee wins West Virginia Republican vote
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won the Republican presidential nominating race in West Virginia on Tuesday, defeating John McCain and Mitt Romney in the first of the day's 24 state contests to pick candidates for the November election, U.S. media projected.

Huckabee, a Baptist preacher, aims to do well among states in the South where evangelicals predominate. He spoke to delegates at the West Virginia state Republican Party convention earlier in the day.

Romney led in the first round of voting but did not have the majority needed to secure a win. Huckabee was projected the winner in the second round.

Politico reports that, after Romney failed to get 50% of the vote in the first round (he ended up with 41%), McCain's delegates all shifted to Huckabee to prevent Mittens from winning.

1. What? they can call it at 3:00 PM EST?
Do the polls close at 3:00 or are they on a caucus system?

Caucus on Tuesday daytime would be so republicon, exclude those who have to work for a living.

3. Not a primary or caucus...
This was a state convention of previously selected delegates.

Much tidier than letting the riff-raff vote.

5. McCain's Reps on 2nd round went to Huckster to deny Mittens
After none of the candidates cracked 50 percent in the first round of balloting in West Virginia, nearly all of Sen. John McCain's supporters supported Huckabee in the second round of balloting, in an apparent attempt to deny Romney -- who poses a stronger challenge to McCain -- the state's delegates.

8. Can someone explain it to me?
This state's primary is not until May 13th.
The Dem's State Convention is June 13-14.

Just how does the State GOP commit delegates to a candidate without a primary vote of the people?
