GOP Scared Over Fraud Investigation Of NRCC
Source: Huffington Post via Politico

Top House Republicans were told in recent days that a former employee of their campaign committee may have forged an official audit during the contentious 2006 election cycle and that they should brace for the possibility that an unfolding investigation could uncover financial improprieties stretching back several years, according to GOP sources briefed on the members-only discussions.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has retained a forensic auditor to review its accounting for the last several election cycles, the sources said.

The NRCC’s accounting problems were discussed during two high-level conference calls between senior GOP lawmakers on Friday and Monday night, according to Republicans briefed on the calls.

“There is a sense that this could be very damaging to the committee,” said a Republican insider close to the GOP leadership.

The precise details of the suspected accounting irregularities and their possible fallout are not entirely clear. NRCC officials and top GOP leaders are being tight-lipped in large part because the FBI is investigating the matter. An outside lawyer advising members and staff has warned everyone at the committee to keep quiet.

11. Bingo
Here's my thoughts from another thread....this is really huge, IMHO.

Remember what else occurred in the Spring of 2004? 8 Billion dollars of money sent to Iraq went unaccounted for....poof...vanished. This was $ that was 'managed' by vetted Republicans only. I'm betting that the balance sheet shows large, undocumented inflow transactions and disbursements to candidates and other "expenses" that were unaccounted for...because it took a lot of money in 2004 to game the election.

I've been suspicious for awhile about the source of the GOP funding. True, they have some big donors, but that money is heavily scrutinized and I've always wondered about those $25,000/plate fundraisers....was Bush that good at raising funds, or did they use that as a laundering mechanism?

I'd be pretty nervous if I am that Treasurer....better stay out of small planes.

3. The National Republican Congressional Committee
NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE (2008 election cycle)
Candidate Committees - $4,895,460

Top Contributors = http://www.fecwatch.org/parties/contrib.asp?Cmte=NRCC&cycle=2008
#3 - Lewis for Congress Cmte - $200,000
#4 - Friends of John Boehner - $180,000

Does this have anything to do with the Big Oil/Stevens & Young funds moving from point to point to point, skirting limits?

5. Wonder if McCain will say anything
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 03:44 PM by Deny and Shred
His McCain - Feingold campaign finance reform bill represented his honest effort to grapple with the problem. It was the issue to which he devoted the most camera time in Bush's first term. Now that he's the leading GOP nominee in a race that will require oodles of $$$, does he have the stones to stick to his principles and support the investigation of his own party's contribution malfeasance?

I'd settle for a sufficient number of (D)'s being so kind.

9. Just blame it on Bush and Rove. Then the NRCC won't have to worry.
