WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama was projected to defeat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Maryland's Democratic primary, NBC News said, completing a sweep Tuesday in the race for the party's presidential nomination.

With 168 delegates at stake on Tuesday, Obama was set to build on the lead that he has gained in the past week in NBC News' delegate count over Clinton, who, according to her aides, is now depending on victories the big states of Ohio and Texas in her struggle to keep up in a race she once commanded.

Clinton's campaign manager resigned over the weekend, and NBC News confirmed Tuesday a Washington Post report that deputy campaign manager Mike Henry resigned Monday. A source told NBC that Henry was leaving to allow new campaign manager Maggie Williams to organize her own team.

In Virginia, Obama gained more than 60 percent of the vote. Interviews with voters leaving the polls showed he had strong support across race and gender lines, indicating that he was eating into Clinton's voter base.

3. How many deligates?
It doesn't matter if he wins, but by how much he wins and how many delegates were picked up.

Because thats the number that counts at the convention.

8. Hillary needs to become a preacher.
She needs to start preaching her goals, not her plans on how
to accomplish. I just heard Obama...all goals, no plans or
methods to achieve.

7. I didn't realize this .... Delegates decide, not "the people"..
This is almost as bad as when the Supreme Court decided b^sh should be PreziDUNCE.
The Delegate count determines who gets the nomination, not the number of PEOPLE who vote for a candidate.
yuck!

9. Actually, I think it's better than the GE and electoral votes.
The people DO count in the primary - The percentage of delegates is determined by our votes, whereas if I were to sit home on the day of the GE, the dem would win, anyway. I felt like my vote counted much more in the primary.

13. Except for the superdelegates who count "more" than everyone else
That's why Bill was on the phone with all of them today to convince them to vote...ummm...well, no one knows, but my guess is he wasn't asking them to support Obama or Gravel.

19. Sounds like
the old white guys in some smoke filled back room of the convention will decide who will be the Democratic nominee. This is of course after a lot of quid pro quo (fancy language for horse trading)

21. I don't think the Dem nationla will overturn the will of the people
A move like that would completely wipe out the turnout advantage we're going to have in November. If they overthrow the primary results, people will be staying home in droves for the GE

22. I hope you are right, but why else would they have them and then sic Bill on 'em?
I thought we were supposed to decide, not the party.

16. HRC's campaign is seriously FLAGGING
and it seems near impossible at this point that she can win in pledged delegates.

All she can do is lose by a slim a margin as possible so as to give the superdelegates sufficient political cover to overturn the will of the people.

Seems unlikely.

I hear Pelosi is leaning Obama now!

that he has pulled out of the neck and neck phase of the horse-race we call the presidential primary.

18. He didn't really "win"
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 07:16 AM by cshldoc
If you pedantically and legalistically redefine what it means to "win" these primaries, Mr. Obama did not win.

* Did Jesus come down from the heavens and personally anoint him with oil in each state? NO.
* Did the governor of each state flagellate himself and tear his clothes, all the while declaring that he's seen the light regarding Obama? NO!
* Did little old ladies volunteer to vote for him by painstakingly writing his name on their Social Security checks? NO!
* Did evolution stop for just a moment, long enough for the Man-Behind-The-Curtain to pop out and mention that Mr. Obama was what he had in mind when he started this whole Intelligent Design enterprise 7 days ago? NO

I know you folks are excited, but I know a loser when I smell one.

23. Yeah, it wasn't even close. Wow.
My formerly Republican husband is actually getting excited about him and trying to convince his family to vote for him. However, if HRC is the nominee, hubby is not voting at all.
