Some Conservative Christian Activists Revisit Idea Of Supporting Minor Party As Alternative To GOP Front-Runner

(AP) The same conservative Christian activist who called a meeting last fall to discuss backing a third-party candidate to counter a possible Rudy Giuliani candidacy is revisiting the idea as Sen. John McCain closes in on the Republican presidential nomination.

Bob Fischer, a South Dakota businessman and anti-abortion activist, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that while he could back the Arizona senator over either Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama, he made clear that he and others in the evangelical movement are not content with those choices.

"I'll be working in other ways to see that we have additional choices as conservatives," Fischer said.

He declined to elaborate, but held out hope that Mike Huckabee might mount an improbable comeback, or that another "good conservative, Godly, Christian pro-life" GOP candidate somehow emerge to supplant McCain. The Arizona lawmaker has opposed abortion during his four terms in the Senate.

I didn't know he had endorsed McCain. Thanks for the update.

7. Sadly, he would probably be angling for Health and Human Services.
I didn't say he was qualified, but that's probably what he wants.

The footage of him falling off the stage trying to catch up with a pancake would be all over the internet. The cartoonists would have a great time revisiting this guy!

6. I Have an Idea
I propose that James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and other well to do Christian Conservatives,i.e. Theocrats, fund an experiment.

Gather together the most hard core fanatics and have them spend a year living under the Biblical law that they all love, the experiment of course will have to include children, and will be monitored by a committee to be determined.

Of course this would require that the women understand that their rights will be severely curtailed, and that the punishments will be those as described in the Old Testament. Now anyone can leave whenever they choose, but before leaving they would be required to make known their reasons for leaving.

I think it's a good way to determine who the true believers are and separate them from those who make a lot of noise but lack real dedication.

12. Read Margaret Atwood's _The Handmaid'sTale_ for a description
of what it would be like. The fundy men would love it - until the purges set in.

8. My question is how a fundy could support...
anybody but another True Believer.

If any candidate is not a "....conservative, Godly, Christian pro-life", then fundies have no moral defense for voting for them.

The fundies are unwilling to compromise on "moral" issues, so how can they vote for a candidate who fails to meet ALL their requirements?

If McCain is even slightly pro-choice, or isn't "born again", they simply can't vote for him.

Yeah! Time for a third party, guys!

13. The Republican Party created this problem by funding and encouraging the extremists.
Now the Republicans can't control what they have wrought.

Before the Republicans started pouring money into elevating the most extreme Christian right-wing kooks in the country into leading positions controlling millions of congregants, the extreme right-wing Christian groups were relatively inconspicuous in politics. The Republicans created a monstrous movement to get their votes. Now the extremists are turning on the party.

15. Actually the Fundies have been around for a VERY LONG time!
Thom Hartmann was talking about this on his program (yesterday I think). He said Andrew Jackson was attacked by RW extremists back in 1800! The attacks were much the same as the are now in that the Fundies wanted GOD in government. Their power has ebbed and flowed over the years, but they sure aren't NEW!

The problem the Pubs are having now is that they convinced the Fundies that they were going to do all they wanted if they got into office, and when they didn't, the Fundies feel betrayed. If they really feel so strongly about having their own candidate to support, they should go for it! Maybe Huck or Brownback would be their guy!

If there really is a God then he/she will make sure that a third party siphons votes away from the GOP. It's the only way to make sure the bastards don't destroy the planet.

25. Never. McCain will get out his cross and wave it on his campaign stops and all the
believers will pray for his election, and organize their churches to collect money for his campaign. Pass the basket for McCain-ah. God-ah will repay you one-hundred fold-ah.

29. Sounds like a plan
The two are made for each other. If we are lucky the GOP will no longer be a unified party and look like squabbling special interests.

The only question is where do we exile them to?
