Pelosi not backing down on FISA
Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 01:49 PM by kirby
Source: C-SPAN

Pelosi is speaking now at her weekly press briefing. She is claiming the Senate is to blame for the impasse and is currently not backing down. She is calling Bush a fearmongerer with the FISA bill. She says Bush has all the authority he needs and that this week is not a 'magical date'. The current FISA bill allows for automatic one year extension for all current investigations.

1. Did the House Republicans just walk out?
That's what I'm hearing on CNN, but don't know when it happened. they say it appears that the law will expire.

2. Walked out due to Miers/Bolten resolution
Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 01:56 PM by kirby
A reporter just said the Republicans walked our due to a "Miers/Bolten" resolution".

"H. RES. 982

Providing for the adoption of the resolution (H. Res. 979) recommending that the House of Representatives find Harriet Miers and Joshua Bolten, Chief of Staff, White House, in contempt of Congress for refusal to comply with subpoenas duly issued by the Committee on the Judiciary and for the adoption of the resolution (H. Res. 980) authorizing the Committee on the Judiciary to initiate or intervene in judicial proceedings to enforce certain subpoenas.

Republicans walk out on contempt vote
By Klaus Marre
Posted: 02/14/08 01:49 PM

House Republicans Thursday left the chamber ahead of a vote seeking to hold White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify before a panel investigating the firing of several United States attorneys.

The move was intended to show that Republicans want to work on a permanent update to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act rather than be part of a “partisan fishing expedition,” as House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) put it.

27. Yup. The Republicans are clowning around.
What a bunch of clowns this bunch is. I just saw it in CNN. If these guys can't get serious, then the doors should be locked and they can all sit out there in the cold.

3. Anyone have a sense of the House on this?
Is it possible they can step in to save the Constitution where the Senate failed? Do we have the numbers of Congresspeople willing to fight this?

11. Doing nothing is what they need to do
in this matter.

Let *s FISA changes expire and die.

Rep Hoyer laid it out just a few minutes ago. He said nothing is urgent here. We let the chimp's spy-on-America law expire and die. Then we will be back to the FISA law that allows people to be spied upon only when the FISA court says it is OK.

develop a spine, however, it takes millions and millions of years for that to happen.

18. If she pissed of the rethugs to the point
where they walked out, She is doing her job. Now she needs to dock their pay and let the FISA bill die as was suggested above. Move it to January 2009 for debate. That will show them.

34. so
When I first saw the news... I have turned into a skeptic. My first thought was to wonder if maybe this is why Reid played it the way he did. Senators are a bit more secure in their positions, and maybe shifting the "win" to Pelosi will help her and hers keep their jobs?

I dunno. Too convoluted?
