Harris: I won't run for U.S. Senate
U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, a hero to Republicans because of her role as secretary of state during the 2000 election fiasco, decides not to run for the U.S. Senate in Florida.
BY LESLEY CLARK
lclark@herald.com

SARASOTA - Ending weeks of political speculation, U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris on Friday said she will not seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, leaving behind a wide-open race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Bob Graham.

The woman who became one of the most polarizing figures in Florida politics for her role as secretary of state during the bitter 2000 presidential race denied she'd been pushed out of the running by a wary White House. And she took full advantage of the national publicity that her talk of a Senate bid garnered to announce she'll seek reelection to her congressional seat -- and perhaps eventually to the Senate.

With a bank of television cameras going live, the one-term congresswoman and heroine to the Republican faithful briefly tantalized the crowd of supporters who stood behind her in a gym at a local Boys & Girls Club.

''After careful deliberation I am here to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate,'' Harris said to cheers and whoops from the crowd. ``Just not yet this year.''

''Oh, unbelievable,'' one woman groaned. Word of Harris's decision was kept under extraordinary wraps, even as the Sarasota congresswoman shuttled from home to Washington, D.C., to talk about her prospects, toting polls that she said showed she could take the Senate seat.

2. something fishy here
The article goes into an explanation of why she's not running (has to do with not being backed by * for fear of backlash). My problem with that explanation is is that the RW ihas never been known for their prescience. Nor have they ever backed off because of what sparks might fly.

Something else is going on here.

3. I'm off topic here..
but I don't have enough posts to start a thread and bring this story to light. I haven't seen any corporate News Networks carrying this yet, nor have I seen it at DU.

Halliburton wins another 1 Billion in Contracts? And this was after they've been under investigation for overcharging?

Will someone with enough posts and the rights to start a thread shine a light on this story?

Thanks.

5. Rumor has it...
... Karl Rove threatened to have her kneecaps broken if she ran -- or worse, to abolish her industrial-strength makeup subsidy.

11. What is the law on a candidate's name being placed on the ballot?
How about finding a different Katherine Harris to run?

Probably couldn't make it happen on the Republican ticket but how about independent?
