Controversial U.S. attorney to quit (Ga - Bush appointee)

By RHONDA COOK
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The U.S. attorney in Savannah, Rick Thompson, will resign next week, a spokesman confirmed Friday.

Thompson, who reportedly has open investigations on two high-profile Democrats, announced his intentions in an e-mail to staffers to resign next Friday. Agency spokesman Dan Drake said Thompson was out of the office and unavailable for comment.

In his e-mail, Thompson, 46, said he plans to return to private practice. Before President Bush named Thompson chief prosecutor in the Southern District of Georgia 26 months ago, he was a partner in the Vidalia law firm McNatt, Green and Thompson.

4. If he has used his office
for sham investigations based on politics then it would be an extreme abuse of power and a disgrace.

Without details on the various cases, or seeing if he has pursued similar cases regardless of the political affiliation of target of the investigations, then the charges would not be founded and it would not be a disgrace.

In the current political climate some members of the GOP seem to be very open in efforts at political intimidation (eg Grover Norquist encouraging republican congressional offices to no longer meet with any lobbyist (even if they are a campaign contributor) if the employer of the lobbyist employs any lobbyist who is a democrat.) There are many such cases - and DeLay leads the way of the arm-bruising power plays. Thus, it would not be inconsistent in this climate for this to be the case (that this appointee was using the power of the office as a tool for political intimidation.) Not saying that this is the case, but that the scenario would not be surprising. And if true - yes it would be disgraceful.

5. So there is no evidence, or even a hint, of wrongdoing
We are just hoping there is something here?

That is worse than what the RW did to President and Mrs. Clinton.
