Nancy Reagan hospitalized after falling

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Nancy Reagan's spokeswoman says the former first lady is staying overnight in the hospital after falling in her home in Bel-Air.

Spokeswoman Joanne Drake says the 87-year-old Reagan was taken to St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica for examination Sunday. Doctors determined she did not break a hip as feared.

Drake says Reagan is staying in the same room where former President Ronald Reagan stayed after he broke his hip at home in 2001.

5. She is so frail, this can't be good. Hip fractures are quite serious...
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 09:44 PM by hlthe2b
so hopefully she didn't break a hip or anything else...

And though I can't say I'm a Nancy Reagan fan, I do wish her well. She has had a really hard time and I have to admire her in many ways. Beyond the fact that I think Patty and Ron are just superb people-- so, I guess Ronnie and Nancy did some things right...

20. Even a bad bruise can do it.
My grandmother was hospitalized for the same thing- a bad fall and suspected broken hip that turned out not to be fractured. But the deep bruise and loss of mobility started the whole not eating, organs shutting down thing, and over about two weeks she kinda faded away until she was gone. Very old people just lose their ability to heal when it's time- my best friend's grandfather had something similar happen back in December- he fell out of bed, landed on his stomach, had some abdominal pain and bruising, his digestive system quit and over a week or two he just faded out.

My grandmother was only a few years older than Nancy is now, and not so painfully thin. My friend's grandfather was a bit younger, but he'd had cancer twice and was obese and diabetic, so he was probably already on borrowed time.

12. Sorry to hear this.
For all of the criticisms that have been launched toward her, it was Nancy who pushed Ronald to cut the final deal with Mikhail Gorbachev that led to the break up of the old Soviet Union. Most all of Ronald's advisors kept telling him not to make any deal, but Nancy pushed him to do it. I give her a lot of credit for that. A lot.

Having a 91 year old mom myself who has had her falls, I truly sympathize with her and Ron and Patti now.

37. You Make a Very Good Point Which Made me Think How Ironic It Is...
that when people such as herself have such a direct influence upon the lives of many (equal to her), yet if somebody says something unkind they are attacked. We live in a crazy World where nothing seems to make much sense anymore. I understand being kind, respectful, but not to those who harm so many by their choices due to their privilege.

38. She, like many others, is a dolt; she believed all of the banal
crap that came out of the anti-drug crowd. I realize that some things are certainly addictive and have consequences, but pot isn't one of them. In fact, virtually anything taken for pain has it's purpose and should be used for such, it is when people take things for other than their designed use, that they come into problems.

I worked the burn unit at BAMC , some people took doses of morphine that would kill the average person, and yet, because of the severity of their burns, it barely took the edge off. None of them became "addicted", but if someone were doing the stuff for kicks, they'd have OD'd or been in a box, and certainly addicted after some time.

But I digress...She has insurance, she'll get good care, perhaps she will see others that don't have the where-with-all and feel some compassion...but I seriously doubt it...:(

29. It sometimes sucks getting old. At least she's not alone.
My grandmother lived alone because she wanted her independence - and when she fell, everyone insisted that if she couldn't be looked after by someone, she had to be put in a supervised condition - "nursing home".

My parents were in their late 60's, early 70's, and she was in her 90's.

Lived to be 102...had all her faculties except severe arthritis of the legs...
