Couple takes unexpected journey to protest Iraq war

It's just another sign, one that would be unremarkable at an anti-war protest.

Handcrafted and crudely assembled, the two facing Masonite boards bolted on wooden posts bemoan the human cost of the Iraq war.

Only, this sign sits at a luxe Atlanta address on West Paces Ferry Road, a few skips from the governor's residence.

The sign rudely interrupts the flow of manicured lawns and winding driveways that lead to plush homes. Passers-by do a double take, craning their heads to figure out what the sign says.

What they don't know is that its unexpected placement mirrors the unexpected journey of the homeowners who erected it.

Jim and Suzanne Barksdale changed their sign to include a photo of a soldier killed and it turned the tide of emotion.

BTW, this guy is a Republican who voted for Bush in 2000 but soured on him and the war.

I am sorry for the Barksdales and those like them who do not "get it" as to why young men and young women step forward and make sacrifices for oppressed people in other nations so that their quality of life might somehow be improved. The Barksdales are the very privileged, the ones who are above these common sacrifices made by the military. They are entitled to all all they have the accumulated and should never known any degree of inconvenience in serve to this country.

This is one of most AMAZING propaganda coups of all times -- convincing citizens of the empire that our soldiers are sent out to sacrifice so that people in other nations might be safe and free -- when our soldiers are given orders to kill -- with bombs, and guns, and...

EDIT: Oh, look what I just found in LBN.

Baghdad drowning in sewage: Iraqi official

BAGHDAD (AFP) — Baghdad is drowning in sewage, thirsty for water and largely powerless, an Iraqi official said on Sunday in a grim assessment of services in the capital five years after the US-led invasion.

One of three sewage treatment plants is out of commission, one is working at stuttering capacity while a pipe blockage in the third means sewage is forming a foul lake so large it can be seen "as a big black spot on Google Earth," said Tahseen Sheikhly, civilian spokesman for the Baghdad security plan. Sheikhly told a news conference in the capital that water pipes, where they exist, are so old that it is not possible to pump water at a sufficient rate to meet demands -- leaving many neighbourhoods parched.

6. Comments on this article are being Freeped. I JUST POSTED THIS ON AJC.COM:
Almost 4000 American lives (and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives) have been lost in a war that happened because of another Bush “thousand points of light,” the constellation of bright shining lies of President George W. Bush (43). Mr. Bush just couldn’t get his war on quick enough. Bush and Company lied; almost 4000 Americans have died.
The original reasons justifying this $750+ billion war are long-gone, down the rabbit hole as it were. The words of Dwight D. Eisenhower, ringing like a Presbyterian deacon, point out the contradictions between war and the teachings of the Prince of Peace: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed" (President Dwight D. Eisenhower, April 16, 1953).
I thank the Barksdales for their courageous stand, as I thank those who stood up against the war in Viet Nam that raged in the city streets of Hue forty years ago today.
As a veteran of 250 air combat missions over Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, I honor the warrior, but not Mr. Bush’s war. As one who can count the names of many friends on the Vietnam Memorial Wall, I grieve for this regiment of good and brave Americans, lost forever in Iraq.

5. I hope Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue sees this sign every day.
I hope Senator Saxby Chambliss sees it too, and remembers the sacrifices of the good man he smeared (nay, Swift-boated) to "win" his Senate seat .. Max Cleland.

My thanks to the Barksdales for having the courage to make this statement. May their days be long and well rewarded with Peace and Justice.
