BloombergFeb. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are battling it out in major industrialized states, determined to fire up the political base. Each other's base, that is.
The two rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination are trying to peel away each other's core of support as they compete in Wisconsin today, Ohio and Texas on March 4, and Pennsylvania in April. Obama is increasingly focusing on older white women and low-income earners, while Clinton is striving for younger voters and independents.
``They're trying to expand their tent,'' said Peter Fenn, a Democratic strategist unaligned with any campaign. ``He's trying to get to the under $50,000-a-year folks, and she's trying to get to the more liberal, established and younger voters.''
If either is successful, it would give the candidate an advantage in what has been an even race so far. Wisconsin polls are divided, with some showing New York Senator Clinton ahead and others favoring Obama, an Illinois senator.
