Iraq war vet accused of baby rape

JACKSON, Mich. - A former Army paratrooper who served two tours of duty in Iraq has been ordered tried on charges of raping and critically injuring a 3-month-old girl.

Kirk Coleman is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree child abuse, charges that carry up to life in prison.

Authorities say the then-27-year-old Coleman attacked the baby Sept. 14 in Jackson County's Blackman Township, about 65 miles west of Detroit.

The girl sustained brain damage and 17 broken bones and is undergoing therapy. District Judge R. Darryl Mazur ruled Tuesday there's enough evidence to warrant a trial.

Coleman allegedly told investigators he blacked out after drinking heavily and taking pain killers and awoke to find the injured baby in her crib, The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported. WILX-TV says he remains free on $100,000 bond.

That girl will be damaged physically and mentally for the rest of her life, and most probably infertile. Drinking heavily is not an excuse for this, nor is then taking medication that was nearly certainly contraindicated with alcohol. He chose to get fucked up, ergo he chose to commit the crime.

That should be considered a capital crime. The victim was completely and utterly defenseless and innocent, he certainly should have known how heinous that was. There is no coming back from that - he should have committed suicide and saved taxpayers the expense of a trial and prison.

Something that I'm very glad about, as someone who has served on a jury in the past. The only case I know of where a Michigan defendant received the death penalty (in the last century) is one that was tried in Federal Court in Grand Rapids-a scumbag tied up his girlfriend and drowned her in a lake in the Manistee National Forest.

Although rarely does a sex offender get a life sentence in any state (if he hasn't killed his victim), in this case, I would guess that he will get it. It won't be mandatory life/no parole, because that penalty is only for 1st degree murder and certain drug charges (possession of over a certain quantity of cocaine or heroin).

I don't greive for these guys when they do get the death penalty, but I am opposed to the dp.
