It drew the ire of national right-wing pundits and the support of local left-wing activists, but Boulder's City Council decided Tuesday night against going forward with a possible impeachment resolution.
The resolution probably would have been targeted at President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, and it would have asked the U.S. Congress to consider launching impeachment proceedings against the two. Had the council decided to go forward, a committee would have worked on formal resolution language and on setting up a public hearing to discuss the document.
Despite the fact that Council Chambers in the city's Municipal Building was packed with impeachment supporters Tuesday, a majority of council opined that the resolution would not be the right move at the right time. All eight council members who were present Tuesday spoke on the issue, and several dissenting members generally said they would rather devote the time to city-related topics.
But citizen supporters pointed out that roughly 90 other U.S. municipalities have already adopted some form of pro-impeachment statement, and that certain members of Congress and others have introduced or co-sponsored resolutions.
For example, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, introduced an Articles of Impeachment resolution in 2007 relating to Cheney. Article 1 alleged that Cheney “purposely manipulated the intelligence process” regarding the threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq, in attempts to justify the use of U.S. military force in Iraq.
