CBS 60 Minutes to run Siegelman story on Sunday
Source: Think Progress

On Sunday, CBS’s 60 Minutes will air its long-awaited report on Alabama’s incarcerated former governor Don Siegelman, reportedly one of its “best pieces of domestic exposé journalism.” Justice Department prosecutors opposed the Siegelman investigation, in which Bush administration political operatives — including Karl Rove — allegedly interfered.

About effen time.

From a blog of a Tuscaloosa News editor back in November: I'm getting reports from all over that CBS's "60 Minutes" is gathering information in Alabama about the case of incarcerated former Gov. Don Siegelman.

First I got an email from a friend who forwarded another email saying that a women who works for the program had contacted the Alabama Department of Archives and History "in an effort to locate the negative television ads that Steve Windom ran against Siegelman in 2002."

Next I heard from a local political operative that he had been contacted by a "60 Minutes" producer looking for insights into the players in the trial that sent the former governor to federal prison for seven years. There have been at least four such producers working on the story in Alabama the last few weeks he said.

Finally, I got an email from someone who was close to Siegelman and has been working diligently to get him out of prison by any legal means necessary. This is part of what he wrote:

"They started working on it about two months ago. They have conducted some15 or 16 interviews. They have talked to all the lawyers, some family, and have been unable to get permission from Justice to interview Don. They have interviewed Doug Jones, Republican AG from Arizona Grant Woods, and Artur Davis. It will be very comprehensive in it's scope, covering the questions about the direction of the investigation and including the main question which is 'was the convicted charge a crime?'"

5. Hopefully it will be entitled "American Gulag", though it sounds more
like a WH-approved whitewash. The main question is 'was the convicted charge a crime?' The main question is "why hasn't Governor Siegelman been availed of his rights to counsel, confrontation of his accusers, and freedom from unlawful search & seizure?" Or maybe, "what role did the white house play in accelerating this entire episode?"

9. TOJ, that last question is the one. To it I'll add :
Was this episode one event, or have similar events occurred? (Answer :yes)
Who else is one the Administration's political hit list, and why?
What other methods have been used to discredit Democrats by the Administration?
Is there any plausible defense for their actions?
Why won't the Dept. of Justice investigate?

7. Why wouldn't "Justice" allow them to interview Siegelman?
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 02:29 PM by Uncle Joe
Everybody and their momma has been interviewed in the past on previous news programs from murderers, rapists, child molesters, con men, etc.

So now a former Governor can't be interviewed?

12. They Interview Charles Manson on TV, but not Siegelman????
Yes, I suggest someone look into the Fed's rules for interviews of Federal prison inmates. I wonder if the same rules have been applied to others.
