WASHINGTON (AP) — A helicopter carrying three senior U.S. senators has made an emergency landing in Afghanistan.

Sens. John Kerry, Joseph Biden and Chuck Hagel were aboard the aircraft., according to Jon Summers, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The lawmakers are on a trip this week that includes stops in India, Turkey and Pakistan.

Kerry and Biden are Democrats from Massachusetts and Delaware, respectively, and the Republican Hagel is from Nebraska.

7. WTF?
Is it really necessary they go there?

Is it smart to travel together?

Don't they have work to do?

I do hope they're ok....

17. This is their work - they are 3 of senior people on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
They observed the Pakistani elections and met with leaders there, and they went to Turkey, India, and Afghanistan. All countries where we need leaders meeting people. It is necessary for them to go and it was not a boondoggle trip.

The Senate is not in session. All three of these men are serious statesmen, who are using the recess to get first hand information on these countries. As to traveling together, I assume the nature of the area is such that they need and get extensive protection. It might be difficult to seperate them and provide them each with that level of protection. I think there is a maximum to the number of Senators travelling together - but it is obviously greater than 3.

22. That's what I said before they left. Especially since something's brewing in Turkey
and they needed to get ahead of whatever lie or plot Cheney is cooking up with his trip to Turkey in a few weeks. They likely are trying to determine the truth BEFORE Cheney starts spinning.

Hagel's spokesman said "equipment problem".
