Alaska's Stevens seeks to stay in Senate
Source: AP

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the history of the U.S. Senate, filed for re-election Thursday despite a federal investigation into his ties to an oil field services contractor.

Federal authorities are reviewing the remodeling of the 84-year-old's official residence in a resort near Anchorage; the contractor helped do the work, but Stevens hasn't been charged and has said he paid all bills presented to him.

He told reporters he decided to run again to battle Alaska's high unemployment and energy costs. He said he thinks the state's development has been stymied by "extreme environmentalists."

"I think Alaska really is heading for a fall if we don't wake up and deal with the enemy that is within us," he said.

4. Doesn't Alaska receive more Fed dollars per person than every other state?
Mainly because Stevens is one of the biggest Porkers in Congress.

I can see Stevens possibly keeping his seat.

8. Yes and yes
Yes, Alaska receives the most back from the feds.

And yes, Stevens will win because he's the king of pork for the state. And because Alaska residents are mostly stupid. I know because I lived there for 14 years.

16. Last year's was just over $1,000
A Liberal friend of mine who still lives there points that out to his conservative friends every year.

Not once has any of them returned the check, which is possible and for which the state uses to fund social programs.

5. This is Great news
That means this vulnerable ape will be taking up the Rethuglican ticket. That means that a Democratic candidate should be able to mop the floor with him.

I was raised in Fairbanks and have family up there (gold rush, wealthy pioneering family) and they are sick of him.

Yahoo, another Dem in the Senate!!!

6. He'll fade into history
as the crusty old barnacle he is, his skeleton firmly glued down to his Senate seat, waiting for the workers with scraping tools to pry him off.

12. "he paid all bills presented to him" His lawyer should really tell him that line doesn't help him.
Most contractors doing free work to bribe a muckeymuck don't present a bill. Kind of defeats the idea, no?

Yeehaw. Let's hope he survives the Pubbie primary.
