Dolphin dies during Navy SoCal sonar exercises

LOS ANGELES—A dolphin died on a beach during Navy sonar training exercises but it was not immediately clear what caused its death, authorities said.

The female northern right whale dolphin died at the end of January on San Nicolas Island, a Navy-owned island off the Southern California coast.

At the time, the Navy's Third Fleet was conducting training that included sonar use. Environmental groups have sued to limit naval sonar use that they fear can harm marine mammals.

However, "there is no evidence that any type of naval activities caused or contributed to this dolphin's death," said Lt. Mark Walton, a spokesman for the Third Fleet.

2. That is a bold statement
considering you don't know one God damn thing about what caused it.

8. dolphins use echolocation to find their way
sonar confuses and hurts them. It's reasonable to believe the sonar testing might have caused it. It is false to say it definitely did NOT cause it. It is also dishonest to claim ignorance of the effect of sonar on dolphins (for the military, not for you).

This pic looks cool, but the military uses dolphins for mine clearance too.

9. To have documented proof that the Navy was testing sonar, documented proof of what the Navy's
testing of sonar and sonar blasts does to dolphins, and to have a dead dolphin at the time and place of the sonar testing/blasting is, actually, quite a bit of evidence of what caused the dead dolphin.

To claim that there is "no evidence" is a fucking lie.

Issuing fucking lies makes one a fucking liar.

12. Where is the proof?
Who said the Navy was using ACTIVE sonar? They could have been using passive sonar only. That could be a possible reason the Navy says there is no evidence and be kinda certain it wasn't them. I don't know, but throwing out the label liar is quick way to get yourself labeled as unreasonable.

13. That would simply be CONTRADICTING evidence. That does not somehow "erase" the EVIDENCE ALREADY
THERE. That DOES NOT SUPPORT someone's claim that there is "no evidence." On the contrary, it is other evidence.

And even "low frequency" sonar has been implicated in dolphin killing.

Geez.

Besides, a federal district court judge already issued an order for the Navy to STOP THE USE OF SONAR OFF THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COST.

14. Still, who says...
Who said they used active sonar at all? Passive sonar does not use any frequencies. high, medium, or low. As you said they are already under order to not use active sonar off the coast. Supposedly in previous exercises they did not use it. Why are you claiming there is evidence they ignored the judge and used active sonar now?

17. Do you have some link to support that it was "passive" sonar? The article does not make any
distinction between types of sonar or talk about "passive" sonar -- you are the one trying to insert that -- as opposed to the kind of sonar that has been at issue now for years and that has been killing dolphins and that has been the subject of a federal court order.

16. If the military denies something then it's probably true
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 02:33 PM by Gman
If they admit to something, you need to be suspicious of why they're admitting it. The only thing you might be able to believe is if they admit to something. Even then you have to be careful. For example, the military announces their intent to shoot down a satellite, then they go and claim they've shot down a satellite. (We have to take their word that it was actually destroyed.) However, the government also claims the satellite carried toxic stuff so it had to be destroyed. But we also know they want to know how to shoot down satellites especially since China knows how to do it. Therefore, they are more than likely overall lying about their real motive for shooting down the satellite.

One thing the military NEVER really does is accept blame.

Been like this as far back as I can remember back to Vietnam. There are plenty of examples from long before Vietnam.

If they're denying, they're lying. If they're admitting, they're fibbing.

20. However, science has been abducted by the corporate-military
Arm of science, which unfortuantely is now the most abundantly financed science.

It used to be that if you observed a piece of evidence, then noted your observation, recording according to scientific methods, location, date and time, and other cogent observations, could be part of an evidentiary database.

But now the military scientistts will jump on this one dead dolphin and say it means nothing.

3. He's probably not lying that there's no evidence of the Navy's involvement, though,
or at least there won't be when they destroy the dolphin corpse.

outfitted in a wet suit, and bombard the waves he's in with loud and
thrumming and eardrum implolding sounds.

leave him in there for a few days.

then have him make his comments.

4. Of course the military denies everything
A mammal which lives by its sonar abilities dies while the military is playing with sonar testing.

No relationship there.

5. The Navy
Uses the ocean as a giant dumpster. It does not surprise me that they have little regard for the creatures that live in it. In order to protect America they must destroy the environment. Makes sense to me.

7. having seen it first hand, the navy can and does take steps to avoid harming animals
that said, military activity of any sort, including testing, is inherently dangerous, and there are at times casualties, whether human or animal.

sonar has long been an important part of our national defense and much as i don't want unnecessary casualties of any sort, i do want them responsibly testing their sonar capabilities. i've seen them do this and i've never seen any irresponsible activities in this regard.

10. So is it a dolphin or a northern right whale?
A right whale is not a dolphin!

The navy always says there is no evidence. They should say, at this point there is no evidence, the autopsy has not yet been performed.

What lazy ass reporting.
