Officer killed in Clinton motorcade
Source: WFAA-TV

DALLAS — A veteran Dallas police officer escorting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's entourage to a rally in Oak Cliff Friday morning lost control of his motorcycle and was killed.

The accident happened on the Houston Street viaduct around 9:20 a.m. The Kawasaki 1000 Police Special motorcycle apparently hit a concrete abutment.

HD Chopper 8 pilot Troy Bush, who flew over the scene shortly after the incident, estimated that the officer had been thrown about 20 yards by the impact after apparently hitting a railing.

The victim was rushed to nearby Methodist Medical Center. The name of the officer, who has been on Dallas force since 1988, was not released.

33. Yes, he did. This is the third motorcade officer death in something like 12-18 months.
Before that, I don't recall any accidents like that for maybe a dozen years. Suddenly it's become a very dangerous job for some reason.

39. Perhaps a sign that riding a motorcycle can be dangerous or
that guarding one of the candidates can be dangerous. Or just that that man had really bad luck today. And I am very sorry for him and for his family.

Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 11:40 AM by RamboLiberal
is becoming hazardous duty. 2 dead escorting Bush, 1 now on this motorcade. Secret Service may need to rethink how they deploy these local officers.

Sympathies to the family and the PD.

who really does not have much nice to say about cops. That being said, motorcycle cops are GREAT riders. When one goes down, it is not because of their skill. Very highly trained. Here a video of a competition that shows off their skills

And this is being down on a full size HD (they weigh a bit more than the KZ1000's that Dallas uses.

Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 01:03 PM by RamboLiberal
I'm thinking that maybe they ought to expand the uniform division of the Secret Service to a trained motorcycle division trained in motorcade escort and stop depending on local PD's. 3 deaths in the past year or two says something to me that this is not easy duty for the PD cops. There's also been some serious injuries. They fly all those limos in, sure wouldn't be that tough to fly in a bunch of cycles and the uniformed Secret Service officers for them.

18. Clinton cuts rally short to visit officer's family
"I have just learned of the death of a Dallas policer officer in a devastating accident that occurred as the motorcycle officers were leading our cars to this site," Clinton told reporters. "We are just heartsick over this loss of life in the line of duty."

The New York senator and Democratic presidential candidate said she planned to cut short a rally in Fort Worth, Texas, in order to visit the officer's family, as well as call the police chief to express her sympathy.

"This reminds us once again what the men and women in law enforcement do every single day," Clinton said. "It is important that we respect and appreciate their service. I certainly am grateful for all they do for me and, more importantly, they do for the citizens of cities like Dallas and across the country. I just want to express my deepest condolences to the family and the Dallas police department for this tragic, tragic accident."

That's class! I feel sorry for this officer's family and I feel sorry today for Hillary Clinton. I may be an Obama supporter and while there are some things in her campaign that angered me, I still think she and Bill are good caring people and they do have a heart.

31. Even the worst of the Democrats is better than the best of the Republicans.
Bush wouldn't do that.

McCain wouldn't do that.

Huckabee would do it, but only with a gaggle of press and photographers in tow.

Even Joe LIEberman was more liberal than the MOST liberal Republican, btw.

This is why we need to support our nominee, who ever it is. They are going to be better than ANYONE the Repukes have to offer.

24. Can we just ONCE be caring people without politics and paranoia entering into it?
A human being DIED today doing a job. That should merit some concern for workplace safety, some sympathy and sadness at the loss of life. Paranoia and politics seem just a wee bit out of place in the discussion.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends.

25. DU Hypocrites...
I seem to recall not too long ago when Bush's motorcade had an officer killed in Hawaii, there were all the comments about 'Death follows Bush' and other equally insensitive crap. Why the moral relativism around here from so many?

As a motorcyclist, my heart goes out to the officers family.

28. He left behind four children and a wife.
Lozada worked out of central patrol and had been with the motorcycle unit for just over a month, said Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle.

Lozada and his wife lived in Plano with their four children, Kunkle said.

36. He had also escorted Obama's motorcade
He had been with the department's motorcycle unit for little over a month. This was his second assignment; he also was part of the motorcade for Sen. Barack Obama when he brought his campaign to Dallas earlier this week.

After learning of the accident following her Oak Cliff rally, Sen. Clinton offered her condolences to the victim's family and to the Dallas Police Department, calling it a "tragic, tragic loss."

Senior Cpl. Victor Lozada "We are just heartsick over this loss of life in the line of duty," she said. "This reminds us once again of what our men and women in law enfocement do every single day, and it is imprtant that we respect and appreciate their service. I certainly am grateful for all they do for me, and — more importantly — what they do for the citizens of Dallas."

A somber candidate moved to her next scheduled event in downtown Worth at 11:15 a.m., and spoke briefly to supporters about what had happened in Dallas. Clinton left the rally without delivering a stump speech, and said she was going back to Dallas to the hospital where the officer died.
