Political Rallies End in Brawl (GOP College Blackshirt assaults Joan Jett)
Two political rallies turned into a brawl Saturday night in Des Moines.

A Democratic rally at Drake's Olmstead Center, urged young Iowans to get out and vote. It was targeted toward high school and college students. A group known for not voting. The rally featured comedian Janene Garafalo and classic rock star Joan Jett, but it got a surprise visit from some unwanted guests.

A group of college republicans at their Midwest caucus leadership conference heard about the rally and stormed in.

I hope Joan Jett files charges against the little fascist who shoved her.

"Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! We're so busted! I know, if it goosesteps like a fascist and talks like a fascist, so please, please, mister Liberal, please shut up and go away!"

Memo to Iowa Young Rethuglicans:

We will NOT shut up.
We will NOT go away.
We will NOT remain silent while your confederates (NO pun intended) act like fascist brownshirts, assaulting prominent Democrats and liberals in the same way that the minions of Hitler, Franco and Mussolini, especially the zealous young followers, did.

We're going to get in YOUR face for a change and expose your agenda of bullying and intimidation. See how you like it. Get used to it, you pathetic little apologist for right-wing thuggery.

In fact, it might be time for you to examine your own conscience for tacit support for fascistic thuggery.

2. that's the whole story?
for crying out loud, maybe it's not tht big of news but it should still be brought out in a bigger light. What kind of precedent does that set if the republican party DOES NOT come out and condemn this type of action? If the rnc doesn't say something apologetic then it could be argued they don't care if their members use nazi type intimidation tactics.

3. Blackshirts, Brownshirts, Rethug mobs they are all the same.
They all share common tactics, namely the use of force and threats of force to attempt to silence and intimidate the opposition. Good for Joan Jett for refusing to allow them to assault her and silence her. Too bad she wasn't present at the staged, Bush financed Gucci-loafered mob action during the Miami Dade recount. http://www.zipworld.com.au/~cpa/garchve3/1028us.html

35. Keith put up pictures of the Dixie Chicks hugging Hussein at his concerts.
After the Dixie Chicks criticised W. in London, Toby Keith was their loudest critic in the Country rock industry and put up doctored pix of the Chicks with Saddam at his concerts.

He had a grotesque hit about 'not messing with Uncle Sam or he'll put a boot in your ass.' He inflamed the jingoistic-nazi-nationalism that is rampant in that particular musical genre. He was rewarded with industry music awards while the Chicks were totally shut out of them. Surprise, surprise.

A few months ago, I browsed a magazine at the check-out stand that had an interview with Keith about his embracing the 'redneck boot-in-the-ass' image. He said he enjoyed it but he actually mentioned that (if I recall correctly) "Bush's numbers on the war don't seem to be completely adding up."

So Toby Keith is an ignorant hypocrite who represents the 'my country, right or wrong' ugly violent American.

Alan Jackson won the categories Keith was expecting to cakewalk through. I thought that was a positive development.

Notice that Keith had to make shit up to criticize the Dixie Chicks (Photoshopped images). A no-talent assclown.

5. Funny thing is... if this had been THEIR event... Faux news would
have given it huge attention and would have trumped up the angle of uninvited unpatriotic democrats ruining the 'patriotic (encouraging voting) republican event'.

Odder yet, the clearly interview one of the college republicans (hence the explanation that a number of them had worked hard to put their conference together and decided to go to the dem rally... and the disclaimer that the actions of one person (the shover) is not representative of the whole group {and just what did they THINK was going to happen when they rallied their troops to crash the event?}) - but they didn't talk to any of the college dems involved in the event that was crashed? What gives?

19. These are the final four paragraphs......................
It's a very small story from a tv station. (They ususally keep their stories really short, of course.)

(snip) A group of college republicans at their Midwest caucus leadership conference heard about the rally and stormed in.

"There are seven of us who worked really hard at putting this conference together, said Jason Cole of the college republicans. "so, we met, discussed and majority ruled. We went down there."

What they didn't discuss is what to do if things get out of hand. One of the Bush supporters shoved Jett and she pushed back in anger. Ole said that was the decision of one person, and not at all representative of what the conference was trying to do.

Campus security did show up break things up. The concert did resume as planned. In fact, Jett wrapped up her day with two more performances. One in Fort Dodge, the other in Marshalltown.
(snip/)

Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 05:19 AM by Skidmore
If giving them the benefit of the doubt, it sounds like their planning committee doesn't know what they are doing and possibly double-booked a room (I doubt it). Even if those little jerks actually had a call out for a conference, it appeart to only have been attended by the seven who showed up. Must not have sold more tickets than to the committee itself.

PS. Did you notice that they'd lowered the registration fee--a MLK day sale for budding young thugs to gain political access.

85. what exactly did they think they were going to accomplish
by going to the Dem rally? Did they think that they were going to talk the crowd out of voting Democrat? Did they think they were going to talk the crowd into believing Bush? Exactly what did they think their presence at the rally was supposed to do?

They had no point--that's what the answer is. There was no point to their going down there except to incite unrest. What did their stupid little caucus have to do with the Dem rally? Nothing. If they had the maturity and courage of their convictions, then they would know that an avalanche of words could not bury their mission. Seeing that they had a grip on their cowardice and not their courage, the only thing left to them was to resort to domestic terrorism, assaulting Joan Jett and attempting to violate her civil rights. There was no need for their hands to be anywhere near Joan Jett to cause a shoving match.

I hope someone there was rolling a video camera--I'd like to see what happened.

44. Javascript
A lot of web pages have been adding Javascript to prevent readers from saving the articles. This also occasionally shuts down some browsers.

I saved it by opening the Source file and deleting all code between the <SCRIPT></SCRIPT> tags. You could also select-and-paste the text. But if the script is causing your computer to shut the connection down, you're out of luck ... until someone who is more adept at Javascript than me can figure out a fix.

37. You really want an answer to your question?
After nearly four years of appeasement from the Democratic establishment, you expect them to condemn anything the GOP does?

A sound bite is not condemnation! Daschle being shocked and amazed that Bush appointed Judge Pickering to the Appeals Court is not condemnation. Condemnation is to demand and work for impeaching Pickering. Condemnation is to heckle Bush when he comes for his SOTUS lies. Condemnation is to file for Articles of Impeachment on Bush for plunging the country into a criminal war in order to pursue a Bush family vendetta.

Anyway, just so it is said, this is my note:

Jason,

Like it or not the country is still a democracy. Your work against the democratic process is a clear indication of the level of threat you view freedom of speech to be. If you take world History 101 and score a D or above you will learn that all great tyrants and their followers despise debate and the oppositions’ voice. Those tyrants stop at nothing to silence the voices of dissent, as your President desires, and you do in his name.

Patriotic Americans strive to preserve the voice of even the despised, because we know that it is the essence of what makes America great.

Your contempt of Democracy is understandable, because if the truth is known there is no hope for your views.

Were they bearing torches, armed with hammers and stakes? What were they hoping to accomplish? Amateurs! Rank amateurs! If one wishes to sabotage such an endeavor they should enter it incognito with air horns and laser dots.

In my lifetime, the brownshirts have never before been so brazen, dissent so thoroughly quashed, and sanity so completely absent from political discourse. bush has shown me possibilities of which I wouldn't have dared to dream, a scant four years ago.

Seems to me, this is a prime opportunity to revoke said charter... after all, student body funds are a form of taxation, and republicans just hate that kind of thing.

"Shredder-Man" came to campus last year for a visit, and there have been a few other "events" that have NO accounting of how much money was brought in or what was done with it....

Their books are a mess, but since this is a conservative campus (you should've heard the Hoo-Rahs from the AAE department at the announcement of "To the MOON, Alice!") I don't expect they'll be de-certified or kicked off campus or anything like that....Now, if they'd had a keg at their call-out....:-)

79. What they did is against most colleges' by-laws
and they could be suspended or expelled. Contact university presents, academic affairs councils and deans and see what happens. I'm sure alumni and other benefactors would think twice about donating to colleges that condone this behavior.

39. this story has some holes in it
Maybe I am just reading this too critically, but this story doesn't make sense. It said TWO rallies ended in a brawl. I just read about one brawl, at the democratic rally at Drake University.

Also the republican quoted in the story, (brownshirt Cole,) said "There are seven of us who worked really hard at putting this conference together, said Jason Cole of the college republicans. "so, we met, discussed and majority ruled. We went down there."

What conference did the brownshirts work hard to put together?

So now the little fascists are picking on petite women. What big "men" they are (not!)

(off topic, is WOI-tv where Ronald Reagan got his start, or am I thinking of somewhere else?)

I was at lunch, and I saw a video of a singer that looked like Joan Jett (with short hair now?). I couldn't hear it, and I didn't see any brawl. Maybe they mentioned it, but didn't have it on tape. This SHOULD be big news, if the media's actually 'fair and balanced'.

60. Here's a report from an Iowa Caucus forum . . .
sounds like an eyewitness:

3:30pm MST. Des Moines, IA.

Drake University student union. Student Dean rally and concert with Joan Jett and Janeane Garofalo. A decent turnout. Crowd quietly milling about. A few minutes into the set, Joan Jett is interrupted by a troupe of young men (with identical short haircuts) and young women -- all dressed in business suits. They wave Bush/Cheney 04 signs. Anti-Dean slogans are yelled. A Flat George replica bandied about. A second group joins in and soon, the chants drown out the music. They are surrounded and shifted away from the hall. One grabs a Dean sign and rips it in half, smiling and posing for cameras. The music returns. The crowd is still jagged from the interaction. Murmurs in the crowd. ... muffling dissent ... censorship ... taste of what's to come... this is why we need our country back... Fox News cameras are there at the concert before the disruptions begin. At a small student gathering. Go figure.

83. Here's the email I sent to the station:
Gosh fellas, I'm writing to find out why the following story
was removed from your website. Who owns your station please? Why would you remove an obviously newsworthy story (young political thugs attack public figure at benefit) unless you approve of their actions, but know that others wouldn't? Please reply ASAP to see if a complaint to the FCC is in order.
"A Democratic rally at Drake's Olmstead Center, urged young Iowans to get out and vote.

------"

Thanks,

If there were additions to be made to the story then the story could remain until the changes were made.

If there were additions or corrections to the story why is it taking so long?

93. Here's the Des Moines Register's story on the repub meeting
http://desmoinesregister.com/news/stories/c4789004/23290005.html

Here's some choice stuff from the DMR's story: (choice, to me, because they are saying they are focussing on fluff and image, not the issues. (Gee, I wonder why.) Also, Wingnut Professor Hagel is giving the youth their marching orders. Telling them they are the muscle.

SNIP

Rather than focusing on specific issues, speakers Saturday addressed what it means to be a Republican, the core values of the party and why young Republicans should participate in politics.

It is important to give young people responsibility so they may become invested in politics, said University of Iowa professor Tim Hagle. Hagle said now is the Republicans" "time to shine," because after Monday, "Democrats will be exhausted."

Students, Hagle said, should articulate why they support the president, tell what the Republican Party stands for, attend rallies, create events, talk to reporters and help recruit more people to the party.

"Young people are the muscle for the campaign," said Hagle. "You are the ones out putting up yard signs and making phone calls."

END SNIP

98. Censorship is right...
I went back and checked the Des Moines Register to see if they gave the Democratic Rally at Drake a story, just like they covered the Republican/brownshirt rally.

They had no corresponding story for the Democratic youth rally at all.

(of course, the paper was full of stories on the Democrats, since it is caucus time after all. But the lack of coverage for the Democratic "get out the youth vote" rally at the Des Moines Register, (while the republican youth got some serious ink) coupled with the Orwellian rewrite of the story done by the TV station that first ran the story, just makes me shake my head and mutter: Liberal Media My ASS)

Here's why the tv news story is Orwellian. In the rewrite, the TV station only quoted the republican kid, who tried to spin the shove match as "the decision of one person to shove, and that one person's actions don't represent what the conference was trying to represent at all." paraphrased.

Where's the democratic response to that, from someone at the rally, or from the College democrats, or something. In this post, or the one in General Discussion forum, somebody at the Democratic rally said the brownshirts did more than just a "simple" shove. They also took a Howard Dean sign and ripped it up. Shouted down the performance. Did that happen? Isn't it a reporter's job to find out this information for us?

Here's my point, I guess: Did the "minister of truth" at the tv station EVEN THINK to get a democratic person's response in their little "rewrite?" I sincerely doubt it. They only rewrote the story to present the republican spin.

Sorry, I have too much time on my hands today, and I've probably made too much of this incident, since everybody at DU already knows that the media ALWAYS kisses right-wing ass.

95. Happened here too
College Dems at one of the local state campuses held a voter registration drive. They did everything right - nonpartisan registration with no party identification at the registration booth and no strong-arming of students who wanted to register. All registration forms were treated equally, no matter what party the student registered with.

As a result, they were harrassed by the College Republicans. Some of the rightwingers staked out a place near the registration booth and harrassed students who were registering to vote. They set up a registration booth of their own and informed students that they would only register Republicans. There was no physical threat, but it was harrassment all the same.

Posted this in the GD thread also.

Earlier this morning the president emailed me in response to the email I sent last night. His response was:

Robbie, I have no idea what you are talking about so it is impossible for me to respond. Norm Nielsen

So I sent him the article from BuzzFlash and repeated my displeasure about how this bullying thuggish behavior reflected badly both on the GOP and the college that sponsored the group.

this afternoon Dr. Nielsen sent this email

"Robbie, Obviously, this is not something we support or condone. I have had discussions with some of our administrators and I assure you we will follow up. Thanks for informing me. Norm Nielsen"

This Christopher Jones may find that acting like brown shirts have consequences.
