NY Daily NewsGorgis Majer's neighbors in Iraq are fighting to survive, but the spunky 10-year-old is waging a life-or-death battle of a different sort.
The boy has a rare brain tumor, and he has come all the way to the Bronx for a shot at wiping it out.
"He is very brave; he's not scared," Gorgis' aunt, Basima Yacob, said yesterday, ahead of her nephew's surgery Friday at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center.
The fourth-grader, who lives in a village near Zakho City in Iraq's Kurdistan region, was diagnosed a year and a half ago after being plagued by headaches and dizziness. The pain became so bad this year that he had to stop going to school.
When an Iraqi doctor recommended that Gorgis undergo surgery, Concordia, a nonprofit group there, connected the family with Dr. Rick Abbott, director of surgical neuro-oncology at Montefiore.
