Building sealed off over packages

A building has been sealed off after several suspected radioactive packages were found inside, the fire service has said.

Emergency services have placed a cordon around the Regent Language Training School in Edinburgh after the discovery of the three small packages that may contain radioactive material.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the incident at around 7pm and have launched a joint operation with police.

Lothian and Borders fire service report that they were called to the scene around 7:00pm GMT. Reports indicate that the emergency is being attended by up to eight fire appliances.

The packages were found inside a cupboard being cleaned, and markings on the packages indicated that they contained radioactive material; the police and fire service have launched the standard procedure for dealing with incidents involving radioactive materials.

Manager Jim Fraser of the Lothian and Borders fire service said: "There are three small packages although we are uncertain at this time whether they contain a radioactive source for definite. "We do know they had been there for a considerable time."
