Missouri reported 37 mass layoffs in January and 2,664 initial claims for unemployment insurance, according to numbers released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Labor.
That compares to 34 mass layoffs and 2,593 initial claims in January 2007. The number of mass layoffs is down significantly from December's 77, along with the number of initial claims dropping from 7,517.
A mass layoff is described as an unexpected layoff of at least 50 people at one company.
Illinois had 68 mass layoffs and 9,106 initial claims in January. That's up from 48 mass layoffs and 5,524 claims in January 2007. Mass layoffs decreased from 140 in December, and the number of initial claims fell from December's 15,012.
None of the above figures are seasonally adjusted.
There were 1,438 mass layoffs in the U.S. in January, seasonally adjusted.
