Economic and Political Anger Sets Off Rioting in Cameroon

YAOUNDÉ, Cameroon (Reuters) — Antigovernment riots on Wednesday paralyzed Yaoundé, Cameroon’s capital, and Douala, a major port city, as popular anger exploded over high fuel and food prices and a move by President Paul Biya to extend his 25-year rule.

The unrest — the worst in more than 15 years in this oil-producing Central African nation — has resulted in at least six deaths since it began over the weekend in Douala, on Africa’s west coast.

It spread to the inland capital on Wednesday after sweeping through western towns.

Police officers in riot gear fired tear gas at protesters in both cities, sometimes using helicopters to drop gas canisters from the air.
