Dave Clark Five singer Smith dies
Source: BBC News

Mike Smith, the lead singer of 1960s British pop group The Dave Clark Five, has died at the age of 64.

He was admitted to hospital on Wednesday with a chest infection, confirmed his US agent, Margo Lewis.

This was a result of complications from a spinal cord injury sustained in 2003 which had left him paralysed from the waist down, she added.

The Dave Clark Five had 19 UK Top 40 hits, including Bits and Pieces and the number one single Glad All Over.

The group are due to be inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York on 10 March, alongside acts including Madonna, John Mellencamp and Leonard Cohen.

Another part of my youth gone... :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWLF5irmC-Q#

(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
Since you left me and you said goodbye
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
All I do is sit and cry
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
You went away and left me misery
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
And that's the way it'll always be

(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
You said you loved me and you'd always be mine
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
We'd be together till the end of time
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
Now you say it was just a game
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
But all you're doin' is leavin' me pain

Time goes by and goes so slow (oh, yeah)
It just doesn't seem true
Only just a few days ago
You said you'd love me, never make me blue

(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
Now you've gone and I'm all alone
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
And you're still way up there on your throne
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
Nothin' seems to ever go right
(I'm in pieces, bits and pieces)
'Cause night is day and day is night

25. They were supposed to go in last year!
Most people don't know what a corrupt voting system they use. For some reason Jann Wenner has the right to veto selections, and did so last year. The voters selected the DC5 and Wenner took them off the list and substituted Grandmaster Flash, who had not been voted in. If it wasn't for that jerk, Mike would have been able to enjoy the recognition.

but the studio forced the change in the script.

30. About the induction, maybe the Dave Clark 5 music will be released on domestic CDs now. As far as I
know, there has been only one double CD released in the USA.

40. Would that by any chance be Hollywood Records 61482-2?
50 Classic Tracks!

Glad All Over was more or less the theme song of our HS sports teams during my senior year.

A great band that never gained anywhere near the attention of the Stones or Beatles. Maybe they had a fair competition going with the Kinks and Zombies?

48. That's the only one that I know that has been released domestically in the USA. There are some
UK imports, 2fors, since CDs are long enough to contain 2 of their albums. I had heard that Dave Clark controls access to the original recordings, but has refused to release them for some reason. Of course, 50 songs should about cover it, but some of us purists prefer the original albums, no matter what the format.

I managed to get their greatest hits CD thru import...none are available in the U.S. (yet) because they were in legal dispute with eachother...I wonder who'll take over lead if they decide to perform together at the RnR Hall of Fame..

3. My favorite....
...before Drew Carey ruined it with that stupid shuffle:

Up every mornin just to keep a job
I gotta fight my way through the hustling mob
Sounds of the city poundin in my brain
While another day goes down the drain

But its a five oclock world when the whistle blows
No one owns a piece of my time
And theres a five oclock me inside my clothes
Thinkin that the world looks fine, yeah

Tradin my time for the pay I get
Livin on money that I aint made yet
Ive been goin tryin to make my way
While I live for the end of the day

Cuz its a five oclock world when the whistle blows
No one owns a piece of my time, and
Theres a long-haired girl who waits, I know
To ease my troubled mind, yeah
oh my lady, yeah
oh my lady, yeah
In the shelter of her arms everythings OK
When she talks then the world goes slippin away
And I know the reason I can still go on
When every other reason is gone,

In my five oclock world she waits for me
Nothing else matters at all
Cuz every time my baby smiles at me
I know thats its all worthwhile,
yeah oh my lady,
yeah oh my lady, yeah, fade........

13. Man, I loved that song.
I remember thinking how fine it was that it was done in such a way that I could see the picture. And I resolved, then and there, that if I ever wrote songs that they would paint pictures.

Ironically, I am going into the studio tonight for the first time in years.

Bobby Weir's (Grateful Dead, RatDog) home studio, no less.

I had followed a little about his life since his accident. I am so very sad to hear this. May his family find comfort and know that for many of us sad kids his music was something to bring joy and get us through to adulthood. That alone is a life well spent.

The DC5 were such a big part of the original British 60's scene along with The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, and Who. Many felt Mike was the best rock vocalist of the time. Funny what you remember... the DC5 banging those high heeled boots in time with that great back-beat. RIP Mike.

The DC5 was great, though. They deserve the HoF. RIP Dave.
