Plight of Iraqi women a 'national crisis'
Source: AFP

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The state of Iraqi women has become a "national crisis" since the March 2003 US-led invasion, a report released by an international women's group said on Thursday.

"Present day Iraq is plagued by insecurity, a lack of infrastructure and controversial leadership, transforming the situation for women from one of relative autonomy and security before the war into a national crisis," said the report by the US-based Women For Women International.

According to the report, issued ahead of International Women's Day on March 8, 64 percent of the women surveyed said violence against them had increased.

"When asked why, respondents most commonly said that there is less respect for women's rights than before, that women are thought of as possessions, and that the economy has gotten worse," it said.

The article goes on to say how 76% of the women they spoke to said the girls in their households were not allowed to go to school.

1. Honest question: Has Hillary made any statements about improving the status of women
in countries where, as news reports tell us on an almost daily basis, they are treated so poorly?

2. I don't know if she has but I hope she does and tells us what help

she will give the women of Iraq and Afghanistan. not talk of help but something that can be done NOW.

getting our troops out of each country would help stop the raping and killing but fingers need to be pointed at Iraq/Afghan men who are a big part of the problem. they may say they love their women, but they really don't.

the criminals to blame are sitting in the WH smirking, counting their assets.

I hate neo cons

3. Mission Accomplished.

Hughes, who became increasingly subdued during the session, defended the decision to invade Iraq as a difficult and wrenching moment for Bush, but necessary to protect the United States.

"You're concerned about war, and no one likes war," Hughes said. But "to preserve the peace, sometimes my country believes war is necessary," she said. She also asserted that women are faring much better in Iraq than they had under the rule of deposed president Saddam Hussein.

8. So let's send Karen to Iraq with exactly the same circs as women of Iraq.
No 1000-troop bodyguard.

No full body armour.

Let her live 24 hours in Iraq alongside Iraqi women.

At least we'd never have to listen to her sick bullshit ever again.
