Clinton aide compares Obama to Ken Starr

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson, taking the campaign a bit meta on a conference call today, attacked Obama for attacking Clinton, and compared him to a notorious Clinton foe.

"When Senator Obama was confronted with questions over whether he was ready to be Commander-in-Chief and steward of the economy, he chose not to address those questions, but to attack Senator Clinton," Wolfson said. "I for one do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is the way to win a Democratic primary election for president."

Wolfson was attacking Obama's explicit strategy, in the wake of his March 4 losses, to attack elements of Clinton's record on the grounds of secrecy, and to revisit the questions raised by Clinton foes in the 1990s and earlier. Obama has demanded Clinton's tax returns, cited delays in releasing her White House schedules, and even made reference to trades in cattle futures in the late 1970s that became a subject of allegations during the White House years.

Wolfson also responded to the substance of Obama's complaint, that Clinton hasn't released her recent tax returns, and to the reminder today that Clinton (via Wolfson) attacked her 2000 Senate rival, Rick Lazio, for failing to release his tax returns.

"Over 20 years of the Clintons' tax returns are part of the public record," he said, referring to their White House years and also to her more recent Senate disclosure forms. "Everyone knows we have made clear that all of the post-White House tax returns will be put out by the campaign on or about tax time – April 15," he said, though he didn't explain why they wouldn't be out sooner."

20. I haven't
Committed to either candidate, I'll vote for the D in Nov., however this criticism sounds about right to me. I've seen many a post on pro-Obama Democratic boards, like KOS for instance, from people who are gleeful over the possibility of resurrecting Whitewater and the Rose law firm billing records issue. As if not enough time and money was wasted on that BS already. I also see many posts slamming Hillary for "standing by her husband" during his marital infidelity, as if that's some sort of damning crime. What's next? Vince Foster conspiracy theories? I seem to remember a time when it was only republicans who peddled this shit

23. Yeah, why go all the way back in time?
We can focus on the fact that she's so chummy with Fox News ("Thanks, Karl!"), and the way she keeps praising McCain while sliming Obama. I'm pretty unhappy with her present behavior. So you were married to the POTUS and that means you have the same experience he does? If you were married to a surgeon, could you take out my appendix?

32. Come on we all know
or should have that this would resurface at some time.

Face it, the Clinton scandals are considered more than fail game by the GOP to think otherwise is to deny the obvious.

I mean it is one of the main pieces of ammo the GOP has to use, other wise they do not have much of anything to work with: Iraq, no, the economy, yeah right. So that leaves her character and attempts to smash via the old 1990's scandals thereof.

When she went into the gutter against Barack she was asking for this, she should not be surprised by the return fire. After all the Clinton's have alway viewed political activity akin to that of waging war.

Hey Hillary some times the other guys shoot back.

We shall see where're this leads.

If by some miracle she manages to get the nomination she wouldn't be able to beat Nixon come November.

3. So it's okay for them to destroy a solid democratic party member.
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 11:45 AM by Kittycat
But when we ask and question them - we're acting like Ken Starr?

Give me a fucking break. Spin, SPin, Spin... If they don't like it - they shouldn't have opened the door to it.

On edit - And now the media is really going to shine a big glaring spotlight on our memories of the clinton's shady dealings (legal or not), bill's behavior -etc. And raise more questions about what they've been up to the past few years.

33. Personally I have always been troubled
by the FBI files thing.

I used to handle those as part of my admin job on submarines in the Navy. They were used to decide what level (if any) security clearance a crewman should be awarded.

In some rare cases the job skill a sailor held required a certain level of security clearance, if he was not able to get it, he could be discharged.

These files contained derogatory things on a person that in more in few cases could not be corroborated (this was of course noted accordingly as an allegation that could not be proved).

These files were kept in the Captain's safe in the ship's office and that safe could only be opened by the Captain, the Executive officer or the Security manager and there had to be a second officer present when the safe was opened.

After they were used they were returned by courier to the local FBI field office.

I was alway unhappy that files of those nature were handled willy, nilly by a political hack for reasons that were never fully explained to the public.

:wtf:

9. If they are going directly to Defcom5 by bringing out the old Clinton nemesis
into this, that tells me they are really worried her tax records and other shady deals from their past (Bill's library fund) will do her some permanent damage.

17. Challenge: Go to the grocery store and ask ten people who Ken Starr is...
perhaps 1 person (maybe 2 if you go to one of those high priced Organic Market places) will have heard of him.

Howard Wolfson is a dufus if he thinks he's being either clever or relevant.

18. Is this part of their kitchen sink strategy?
"When Senator Obama was confronted with questions over whether he was ready to be Commander-in-Chief and steward of the economy, he chose not to address those questions, but to attack Senator Clinton," Wolfson said. "I for one do not believe that imitating Ken Starr is the way to win a Democratic primary election for president."

This reiterates that the Clintons only care about POWER, not PARTY.

Hillary is excellent at spin, but her management skills are awful. After 8 years of Bush, I'm not looking to elect a Democratic clone. A Hillary Presidency will be four years spent bickering over how many angels should be allowed to sit on the head of a pin. And she says she's learned from her past mistakes....
