Rove taunted at University of Iowa
Source: CNN

March 10, 2008

(CNN) — Former top Bush aide Karl Rove didn't get the friendliest of receptions at the University of Iowa Sunday, CNN affiliate KCRG reports. Rove, who was paid $40,000 to speak at the University, was confronted with an at-times hostile crowd of 1,000, and was interrupted on several occasions.

At one point during the speech, Rove reportedly lashed out at some of the students, saying, "You got a chance to ask your questions later and make your stupid statements, let me make mine."

Police also were forced to remove two people after they tried to perform a citizen’s arrest on Rove for what they said were his crimes while a member of the Bush Administration.

At one point, a person asked Rove if he has ever shed a tear over the war in Iraq. "I shed a lot of tears and I have been inspired by many of the people who feel their son or daughter should not have to die in vain," he replied.

Toward the end of the speech a member of the crowd yelled, "Can we have our $40,000 back?" Rove replied, “No, you can't.”...

1. I do hope that this is a sign of the times to come, because.....
with comments like this......"I shed a lot of tears and I have been inspired by many of the people who feel their son or daughter should not have to die in vain," he replied. This man should be in Jail....

33. ABSOLUTELY let them know how you feel.
ANYBODY who's an alum of a college or university should make that clear, PREEMPTIVELY. Perhaps it will short-sheet his speaking plans for other college campuses in the future.

Let's make him a PARIAH across the country.

71. There must be a law somewhere that says whoever books speakers
for college campuses is required to prove how cool they are by selecting the most edgy speaker they can find. It's been that way for at least 30 years. The really unfortunate part is that generally the overpaid speakers are paid from the slush fund A/K/A mandatory student activity fee.

77. The $40,000 is income Rove "earned" (and I use that word loosely)
in Iowa, so he should file a tax return there, should he not? I know I paid Oregon taxes for the money I earned there, while filing a return in Virginia for the same year.

Iowa accountants, I expect you to keep track of this.

5. Rove, crowd at U of I trade barbs
Uowa City, Ia. - By the time Karl Rove took the stage at the University of Iowa Sunday, groups from around eastern Iowa had been protesting his presence for two hours.

The protesters staged a mock trial for President Bush's former top adviser inside the U of I's student union and draped the side of a nearby parking ramp with a 60-foot anti-Rove banner that police quickly removed.

As soon as Rove entered the room, boos, shouts of "traitor" and "war criminal," and occasional cheers emanated from the roughly 900 audience members - and lasted the entire hour and a half in which Rove took questions.

After the most boisterous protesters were escorted outside by police, U of I journalism professor Frank Durham, whose body of research has included study of the Bush administration's relationship with the press, began quizzing Rove on issues ranging from foreign policy to the state of the U.S. Constitution.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=PluckPersona&U=c93e5f51e57d4a1696a5e44246b6eb53&plckController=PersonaBlog&plckScript=personaScript&plckElementId=personaDest&plckPersonaPage=BlogViewPost&plckPostId=Blog%3ac93e5f51e57d4a1696a5e44246b6eb53Post%3abd8fae27-92e3-426b-a23c-d5df55e2f80a&sid=sitelife.desmoinesregister.com

Doubt this link will work, but this is a heck of a good story. By David Goodner, who is currently getting roasted in his blog.

Here are highlights:

Karl Rove avoided, denied, lied, obfuscated, smeared, and spun the truth at a $40,000 UI Lecture Committee-sponsored event in Iowa City Sunday night, but his afterparty at the 126 restaurant on the corner of Dubuque and Washington was interrupted by a crew of citizen protesters calling for his arrest.

snip

But the real action happened after Rove's speech (he ducked every question thrown at him or retreated to ideological arguments that obfuscated the truth), when the reconnassiance wing of the UI Antiwar Committee received secret intel that the Lecture Committee was treating Rove to dinner and drinks at the bourgeois 126 restaurant.

snip

"Karl Rove, we know you're in there," I said through the bullhorn. "We have the place surrounded. Come out with your hands up."

Students began pouring out of their apartments, many joined our picketline, we received alot of support, and two guys even brought us hot coffee. When Rove tried to sneak out the back door, we ran around to Dubuque Street and blocked his escape route out of the alley. Rove ran back inside and eventually walked out the front door and drove off.

back to bite them in the ass. Good for Iowa. These students are no fools. All Rove could do, it seems, is shout back like an idiot who has no way of defending his criminal actions but to use an ad hominem attack.

53. I want to see this in real life.
And I want our language to change so that the name Rove becomes a household word.

I want it to be in the same category as a guy named Quisling or a guy named Boycott. Their names became interchangeable with "traitor who works with the enemy or occupier" and "abstain from buying or dealing with as a protest."

I want Rove's name to mean a campaign or government official who smears, lies, ruins, demeans the opposition, and who breaks the law and gets away with it. I hope it also comes to mean a person who is caught in the end and jailed.

Many people don't know the origins of the words quisling or boycott. But the history is there for anyone who is interested. Let this happen to Rove!

But the sad fact is, they died for profits for the ruling class. That is worse than dying in vain as far as I can see.

People HAVE to hold on to the illusion that such loss had honorable purpose. Fact is, the troops deserve better leaders than what they have had in all this. Supporting them means taking the reins of government out of the hands of those who profit from spilling blood. Slapping a yellow magnet on the fender just doesn't do them justice.

It's becoming clear that the Bushco crowd are the first US administration reps who, after leaving office, won't be able to travel abroad due to people wanting to have them prosecuted for war crimes, and won't be able to speak domestically because they will just attract angry, hostile audiences.

52. Well I was there for a short while
Joined the protest out in the hall, then went inside.for a while. Had intended to walk out when Rove started and did so with some friends I met there. Doubt that we made any bit of a ripple.
What amazed me is that the crowd seemed to be majority Rove supportive or ambivalent. We were near the front. When we stood with our backs to Rove I looked around. The crowd seemed very docile. I was disappointed. I talked with a lady on the way out and she said she figured every RepubliKlan in Johnson county was there.
Of interest is that no recording devices were allowed after the introduction. I thought that to be extremely strange:(from the jcrepugs website)
===============================================================================================
NOTE TO MEDIA: There will be no media availability with Rove in connection with his appearance at the university. Television and radio journalists and news videographers and photographers may shoot and tape the event for the first five minutes of Rove's remarks. After that, reporters may take notes, but no recording devices may be used. A more detailed media advisory will be sent out next week. In the meantime, media interested in covering the event are asked to contact

Just asking for a guess because it looks like the local repugs did what they could to load up the audience with kool aid drinkers. That's part of the Rove playbook. But his problem now is that he is not able to herd opponents off into free speech zones.

I'd like to think that I helped get some of the folk going there at my alma mater getting geared up to protest him. It was cool they had an extra month to plan this. Perhaps if there is a God, he did this to make sure that Rove had to face the music before he'd get this cash, instead of trying to "sneak in" there.

Police also were forced to remove two people after they tried to perform a citizen’s arrest on Rove for what they said were his crimes while a member of the Bush Administration.
I'm sure some law student will have a field day with defending them, it'll make for an interesting course paper.

Toward the end of the speech a member of the crowd yelled, "Can we have our $40,000 back?" Rove replied, “No, you can't.”...
"I've already paid my tab with the hookers."

94. He spat on Sheryl Crow
This guy thinks his shit doesn't stink... "You can make your stupid remarks later"
A refresher of how he treated Sheryl Crow and Laurie David at last year's White House Correspondents Dinner:

"In his attempt to dismiss us, Mr. Rove turned to head toward his table, but as soon as he did so, Sheryl reached out to touch his arm. Karl swung around and spat, "Don't touch me." How hardened and removed from reality must a person be to refuse to be touched by Sheryl Crow? Unfazed, Sheryl abruptly responded, "You can't speak to us like that, you work for us." Karl then quipped, "I don't work for you, I work for the American people." To which Sheryl promptly reminded him, "We are the American people."

and I consider myself an Iowan first and foremost. In that spirit can I please indulge in a "fuck you in your Iowa bigotry" to a lot of people who, in their frustration over the primary system, were dismissive of Iowans as (I hope I'm quoting this correctly) "too rural, too white and too evangelical" to have valid opinions. I'm assuming these are people who have never been to the great state of Iowa or who have only looked at it through the lenses of a distorted sense of superiority that leads them to believe they're superior to "fly over" states.

112. For Future Tauntings: "It's The Election Theft"
Rove doesn't really take responsibility for the war or the torture or the illegal spying. That stuff's above his pay grade -- part of cheney's paranoid global domination fantasies.

The way to really get his goat is with the election thefts. That's what he always seems to bring up himself in his limited public statements over the years -- attempting to dismiss it.

He knows full well that he was caught both times and that no one considers him a "boy genius" anymore because of it.

If you get the chance, "Election Thief!" is what makes his blood boil.

I went to school there, you know, and I never have believed the disinformation that Iowa was a Bushite state. It just ain't so. Iowans are the most progressive people on earth! It's gotta be "trade secret" vote counting (Diebold & co.)

It doesn't surprise me in the least that, if you put 1,000 Iowans in a room with Karl Rove, insurrection occurs. These rebels are MAINSTREAM Iowa. Believe me.
