BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Slain human rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. could be arrested and imprisoned under the Idaho Terrorism Control Act if he were alive to lead a protest march to the state Capitol, a lawmaker says.
State Sen. Michael Burkett, D-Boise, is backing legislation to loosen the harsh standards of the law which was passed in what he calls a "frenzy" after the September 2001 terrorist attacks.
"Dr. King would have committed an act in violation of law," Burkett told participants in a march from Boise State University to the Statehouse during a King holiday observance.
"That is our current definition of terrorism," Burkett said. "Dr. King could be charged with a felony, labeled a domestic terrorist and subject to up to life in prison for his act of civil disobedience."
